"I think you are playing on hard mode."
I need some hard-mode though.
I didn't have anything I wanted to do in Boise. Or Caldwell. Or Idaho. I wasn't excited by anything there.
I kept running simulations in my head, trying to paint pictures of where I'd be. How I'd wake up. I had places I liked to eat. I had people to talk to at night. I had a city.
The image of a person that looked like me started appearing in my mind. I never saw what this person did during the day. But I watched him at night, looked at him as he talked to people I knew. I watched a year go by as places, seasons, and people began to blur together. Two. Three. Four.
I watched him slowly become a hollow creature, whose limbs gradually melded into the scene I found him in, only able to move as far as its borders existed. The sunken monster wearing my face would stare at me every day, as I tried to fix something or tapped out commands on a computer in the basement of Sterry Hall.
That was basically how I spent the last two years. I started feeling this kind of resolve. The kind that you feel behind your heart, in the center of your chest. This itchiness, that you can't explain if asked, but you know you have to go do something.
During the spring of my freshman year, I was challenged by a graduating senior to reflect on my "aspiration". That challenge has slowly burned in my mind ever since.
As hard as it is, I'd rather give up my world in the west than face that monster on its terms. Every hero has to be able to bring back something to the folks they left behind. I have 12 11 months to get started.
