Happyfeat
Colin AKA Happyfeat is a well rounded source of talent. He brings great energy to the dance floor and passion into his own music. He has two alias named DTF and Pojar which he uses to explore different creative outlets. He has provided several mixes and continues to be one of the hardest working DJs on Vancouver Island.
Why is your name Happyfeat? Â
A bunch of reasons! To start, I was really into dancing before I started DJing, and my sets are always full of positive energy, so I think it suits me.On the flip side, I chose it because even if people hadn't heard of me, they've heard of the movie so there's a connotation there to make it memorable.I didn't want a DJ name that you'd forget as soon as you heard it.
What your plans for 2011? Â
I have a bunch of shows coming up at the Sunset Room and at outdoor locations, but the really exciting things are what's happening inside my studio right now.I'm working on a new sound that fuses dubstep with 9O's hip hop, of which I am personally a big fan. Â I'd like to call it 'dub-hop' but that doesn't really roll off the tongue, does it? Â Maybe you can think of a better name!
If there were no limits at all where would you want to throw a party? Â
The moon. Â Imagine dancing in 83% less gravity! Who are some people that inspire you? Â
My first DJ role models were DJs Bonefish and Carson. The way I produce music has a lot to do with ill.Gates's production workshop and watching Soulfix in the studio.  Nowadays, I find myself inspired by the work ethic and creativity of the new breed of Victoria artists, such as Veela and Y@! (now Wyatt Squared) Are there differences in your style as Happyfeat and DTF? HappyFeat has always been about playing any type of music I like.  There are a few basic rules; it's gotta have a lot of energy, and it's gotta be fresh and original.  Nothing kills a DJ's enthusiasm likelistening to essentially the same song over and over and over again. DTF! on the other hand, is just a side project I'm releasing tracks under at the moment.  With DTF! I can be more precise with my taste, and in this case that means more bass, baby! DTF! is not the only, or final side project. I also make psychedelic downtempo as 'Pojar', and I'm sure my next evolution in the studio will have a different alias.  I call it what I think it should be called, and then see what happens!Â
What is the first thing you do when you start writing a new track? Â
I make sure I have lots of time, lots of coffee, and inspiration of some sort. Â This could be a song or lyric I want to sample, or a remix pack, or maybe just a bassline I made up in the shower. There's nothing more disheartening than sitting in the studio for hours and not coming up with anything you like. Â If you don't have any inspiration, it's much better to spend the time you have on learning new techniques or just fooling around with new instruments and effects. What do you do when you are not DJing or writing music?
I spend a lot of time with my girlfriend, and I also enjoy outdoorsy stuff like hiking, biking, camping, snowboarding, and visiting new locations. I also like making desserts. Â This week I'm going to make a cake that's half mocha cheesecake and half chocolate brownie, with fudge icing and raspberry sauce. Â And I'm going to eat the whole thing. :P Anything else you would like to add?
It seems to me that every year, more and more people want to start DJing or producing music. Â I used to feel the same way. Â You just have to start, and keep going. Â If you keep evolving and improving yourself, there's no limit to how far you can go. Good luck! :D -HappyFeat
