A look into the design process that Mantine went through with the final results of said process being the very top image/first sprite in this post; Mantine’s very first design, known initially as Haneei/ ハネエイ, had more of a bird/kite appearance to it with a terrifying face adorning its back; once that silhouette was discarded in favor of the more familiar, manta-ray like shape, it seems like it really went through some tweaks before finally becoming the well-known Pokemon we’re all familiar with! It even sported TWO torpedos that also then became two fish-like shapes at one point or another instead of the singular Remoraid!
