(Note: Again, please pardon the ridiculously small cages that the first hamsters I ever had back in 2002 were housed in. Like the prior post, these photos were taken in 2002 and are so old that this is the only image I have in existence of Buttermilk and one of only two in existence of Sundance.) Buttermilk came to me the same way Li'l Critter did. After my sister rejected Critter, my mother and I went to the pet store to find a hamster who "looks less like a rat." My mother fell in love with Buttermilk because she was a long haired Syrian hamster like Dixie. We brought Buttermilk home and in typical 12 year old fashion, my sister lost interest in her quickly. Since I already had two, what was one more? Or two more? By the end of May that year, I had rescued Sundance from the clutches of some young lads who wanted to feed her to their pet snake. The pet store was willingly going to sell her as snake food due to the fact that they had deemed Sunny vicious and hopeless. She was a biter and she could never be held long, but I loved her just the same as the other three under my care at that time. (She was still in the pet store because she had gone on biting sprees with two separate families who had both taken her home and then promptly returned her.) These were my original four. Even though they came into my care over the course of 3 months, I always refer to them as my "original four." Come join Li'l Pocket Bears in celebrating all things hamster, all day. . Many of the rescues, pulls, purchased, and/adopted hamsters I have had over the years...I never knew when their birthdays were. I documented their "home days" so they could have something like a birthday to celebrate. Sometime last year though I was thinking that I ought to observe a single day, same day every year, to spoil the hams even more and to just celebrate their tiny existences all together. . I chose Valentine's Day because that's the day 15 years ago that my hamster adventure officially began. I also chose ithat day because I have always had a love/hate relationship with the lovey-dovey holiday and this seemed like a cute way to turm that into something positive. . So, on February 14, 2017, I'm going to be celebrating "Hamster Day." All hamsters, hamster's humans, and friends are invited to join the celebration. I'll be posting hamster stuff all day, taking new photos of the floofs, and just engaging in hamster silliness here on IG and on my Facebook page, "Li'l Pocket Bears."
