I caught this pair of baby sisters goofing last week when we were working on IDing and sorting all of the hamsters from the intake. That fur coloring with the light colored eye rings is called sable, and I've thought it was one of the cutest color patterns in any of the pet animals we care for. These girls got their individual bin cages, of course, but they were a bit too young to live alone last week. Today's Google doodle features hamsters!!! Extra special for me and my crew today because in this household we don't celebrate Valentine's Day. We celebrate today as Hamster Day because Feb 14th marks the anniversary of when I got my first hamster ever, Dixie. That was back in 2002 and with the exception of a few months during a transitional period, I've had hamsters ever since. This is Eustace Chapuys, our daughter's Syrian hamster. We brought this cuddle kiwi home in February, a few days before our daughter turned 2. I thought she needed a cuddly pet of some kind because she was incredibly interested in our son's first two rats, Togedemaru and Pikachu. Originally, we were told Eustace was male, so we decided to name him after Katherine of Aragon's most dedicated supporter, the Spanish Ambassador at the Tudor Court. We have since learned that this hamster is actually female, so we call her Chappy (although we called her that when we thought it was a male, too). She is a rather excitable hamster, and of all pet rodents, I'm convinced this one might be the most fearsome if you wake her up. She usually sleeps on her side like this or wholly on her back, all four paws in the air. She likes our daughter better than anyone else, and our daughter doesn't flinch - beyond a scowl - if Chappy nips at her (she's drawn blood once, when we first brought her home). Our daughter will simply point one finger at the hamster and say, "You don't bite me" in an even, commanding tone. Chappy likes yogurt drops and sunflower seeds, and she has a habit of stuffing so much food in her cheeks that she can't fit in the tubes in her cage. Around 9:30 PM every night, she'll stand in the corner of her cage and fold her hands, staring at @the_envirominimalist_dad until he feeds her. What can I say? A couple weeks ago we had to say good by to a very special boy. Wolfie Was starting to slow down to the point where it just wasn’t fair anymore and we had to help him take the final steps. This boy was extremely important to this hamstery. He flew here from Europe As a young pup and when we pulled him out of the carrier he was the sweetest and calmest little dude and soon became everyone’s favorite. His coat was incredible; so velvety soft . He passed this on to all of his babies and many many children are alive and doing well carrying on in our lines. He made it to 2 years and 4 months before his body left this earth. This pics are most recent to the day we met him.
