Boy, has it been some kind of journey. I have been to a funeral my first week into my living space and missed my first day of school. i just had my second. But it looks like I will have some space to write about webcomics at least to some kind of regularity. Hopefully I will get something typed up real soon.

I think last time I mentioned doing a re-read of a webcomic but I won’t do that. At least not now, that kind of thing is pretty inevitable. Instead during this break I picked up reading Glam Rock Gorilla created by Hammer Smith who writes and employs several artists who go by Kelsey, Tom, Sarah, and Maya. I found that much out through their Cast and Crew page and I guess the artists don’t have last names. I started it and I almost immediately have issues with the comic which will be the subject of the next big post. I’m not done and as far as i know I’m only at the beginning of the story (there is no archive to show my position so i cant actually tell) so the observations will be limited. While I’m typing up my first article on Glam Rock Gorilla, check it out. Tell me what you thought of the beginning.

1) Who are you, what do you do, and what kinds of events lead you to write this comic?

Hi my real name is Brett but my not-so-secret identity is Hammer Smith, writer of Glam Rock Gorilla. I do other things to pay the bills, but that's irrelevant right now. The main series of events that led to Glam Rock Gorilla (GRG) were an online random character generator, Scott Pilgrim and other music-centric comics, and tapping into my childhood love for gorillas. (My mom would give me heart-donned gorillas for Valentine's Day. And lest we forget Donkey Kong Country.)

  2.) You have a lot of strong female characters in GRG (My favorite is Marcy!) along with a silly, if slightly void of emotion robot. What has character development been like and who is your favorite to write?

Tad is the easiest for me to write. Lex and Marcy have been fun so far - especially Marcy - but it's like always walking on eggshells. Or rather in a room with spilled LEGOs; some things are so obvious that I avoid potential problems altogether, but I might end up stepping onto the family cat if I don't look ahead.

There is the difference in personalities, and making sure they don't come off as one-dimensional, but the fact is I am inherently looking through a glass window when it comes to writing female characters. All I can hope for is enough understanding to present a character whose flaws are theirs and not those of my writing skills.

Character development can be frustrating because of what should be shown, what should be told, and then all the when & where & why & how. Naturally there's so much more that I know about the characters than what has been presented already, but those unknown things could be Big Deals for the audience. Which is why I hope people stick with GRG for the long haul. Amadeus was the most difficult to write because of his overly formal syntax, as all home schooled robots are. Fortunately, since the Compound Collaboration, he's gotten a better "feel" for how people actually speak. I wouldn't say he's void of emotion, but he was literally faking it with pre-programmed body languages.

3.) I've noticed that you use a team of artists to beautifully illustrate your work. Has your original vision altered at all once you have someone elses drawings bring the comic to life?

The problem with my vision is that it's always out of focus. Spatially/Artistically my dreams and mind pictures resemble Bill Sienkiewicz, which would not have been a good art direction for GRG.

I always planned GRG to be a jam band of sorts, since there was realistically not going to be a permanent artist. Plus I wanted to showcase as many of my Art Friends as I could. I've just been lucky that all four artists - Tom, Kelsey, Sarah (who has helped me a great deal with world-building), and Maya - and their styles fit the tone of their time & place in the story. And that they can tolerate my director's hat. Writers: Be good to your artists. Give them artistic freedom, compensate them for their work, and goddamit, you've got to be kind.

4.) There seems to be a bigger story/forces at play beyond the band rocking out. Care to give any cryptic hints as to where the story is leading? Who is the creepy show biz monkey man REALLY?

There have been some less-than-cryptic clues as to the connections between the band - or at least one of them - so I would suggest people reread and pay attention to the devil (or demigod alien) in the details. And yes: Lex dyes her hair. You mean Julius? He's simply a high-strung businesschimp with some sweet hair. Such a scamp. Thank you to everyone who has been reading or is now interested in GRG!
