We’re no Hamlet connoisseur but this is a solid rendition of the tale. The art direction and set design properly wow without feeling overly extravagant like in Branagh’s version. There is a sense that the kingdom is already in decline, an emptiness in the halls as the previous king’s death still lingers. The acting is good across the board, with Jean Simmons as Ophelia really standing out for us. Leaving her crying on the floor in the wake of the nunnery scene shows a sense of how she is being torn apart by Hamlet’s actions. A good use of cut-ins to show certain scenes feels like it’s really taking advantage of what the medium of film can do over the stage. Don’t know if it was best picture worthy, but it’s a fine version that still stands the test of time.
