I have a student in my classroom that got upset when he didn’t know how to glue a smaller circle onto a bigger circle. And when I mean upset, I mean screaming and crying and pounding on the table until I had the principal come in to help me. After 15 minutes of that, he quieted down. But then at recess he found a rather pointy and large stick and told me he wanted to take it back to class. I told him it wasn’t safe so he couldn’t keep it. Then comes the worst tantrum I have seen in all of my career. He cried and screamed for 40 minutes straight. Any paper I would give him he would rip it up. I ignored him the entire time because anything I said would only make things worse. I had students covering their ears and telling me they want him to stop crying so that they could listen to me. This continued until a social worker finally came to help and took him out of the room. He came back still crying and went home crying. This morning he came to line up and was told to go to the back of the line because that’s what every kid is supposed to do, and then had another tantrum. Someone came and took him for a walk and his former kindergarten teacher gave him a stress ball and some playdough that he used to have last year. He was a lot better the rest of the day. 

I got home from spending the day with family and friends, I made a coffee, wrapped up warm and took myself out for a long evening walk.
