hi! i'm interested in majoring in marine biology because i find it so interesting, but honestly i don't really know what jobs/careers are available for marine biology degrees? sorry if this is stupid question :o
Hi! This is absolutely NOT a stupid question (itās actually a very important question to ask) and I am happy to answer!
Marine Biology is a great major! Itās interesting, challenging in the best way and lots of fun, but the job market is highly competitive. There are opportunities in husbandry (animal care at places like aquariums) and research. There are also government jobs in your stateās department of environmental protection (DEP). Since it is still a new field these opportunities can be difficult to find so you have to know where to look, check indeed.com and your state governmentās job listings to see whatās available and what they are paying before you make any definite decisions.
Also Iāll be honest the pay in not always great. So if you want to go into husbandry or research make sure itās something you really love.
That being said, also consider getting a minor in something like chemistry or biology. Typically this only requires a few extra classes and it makes you more marketable as a potential candidate. Thatās what I did. I have a minor in Bio so essentially I can do anything a bio major can do but my studies just focused in a slightly different direction than most.
