How many times during half term have you seen your child’s face look like this? It’s frustrating when they say ‘I’m bored’ and sigh a lot when they are in the middle of an activity you’ve basically organised for them. Initially it’s easy to think - gahhh I’ve spent a small fortune and you are so ungrateful- I don’t know why I bother. The reality is they are shattered - truly shattered and emotional - emotions that they can’t quite articulate. Nursery, Pre School, School for them and even Work for us offers routine. We know how we feel when our routine is rocked, but they feel the same and sometimes that 5 minute wobbly is exactly what it is about. At the point I took this photo of her discreetly - she was furious with me as I had fallen into the trap of ‘we are at twin lakes, we went to the zoo yesterday- how can you be bored’ and I said it with infuriated tone. When I said it out loud I appreciated that she was shattered as was I! I gave her the space she needed and ignored her attempts to provoke an argument- but offered her a hug! A coffee for me and creme egg (won from the Easter egg hunt) for her - the world was a better place. I’m not perfect as a Mum by any stretch but this was a reminder to look at the bigger picture for them before we make a judgement on their behaviour!
