âAre you sure youâre okay?â Adeline asks, grey eyes boring into me, more concerned about what Iâm doing than eating the food in front of her.
âYup. You know, youâve asked me that five times in the last seven minutes. Iâve been counting,â I answer, pointing and circling my french fry at her.Â
We drove for at least eight hours straight, getting as far away from Maryland as possible. Now, weâre somewhere in Kentucky, stopping for the rest of the day in a random motel we found. Weâll probably leave late at night or early in the morning to make some more distance, or weâll stay until we find our next hunt. As for now, weâre eating McDonald's around the motel table.Â
âYou got shot. What the fuck do you expect me to ask?â she bites back, stealing the fry from my hand and tossing it onto a napkin by her drink.Â
I frown, eyes trailing after the discarded fry. I was gonna eat that. At the very least, she couldâve eaten it.
âIâm fine, though,â I tell her. âThereâs no bullet hole or anything, and I donât even have blood on me anymore.âÂ
I took a shower and changed my clothes the moment we got to the motel. Then, Sam came back with the food, and we all piled into their room and around their table. In fact, out of the corner of my eye, I can see the boys share a little side glance like they could sense an argument brewing.Â
âYouâre coming home with me in the morning,â she declares, arms folded across her chest.
I choke on the sip of soda I took, coughing into my arm. âWhat?!â I exclaim once I get my bearings together. âNo, Iâm not. Thatâs not your decision.â
First, Dean was trying to convince me to get out, then my brother, and now her? And I get it, okay? This âjobâ ainât pretty, and itâs sure as hell not safe, but I chose to do this.Â
Actually, Iâm kind of surprised Dean hasnât piled onto this, hasnât lectured me about taking a bullet for him again, even if this time it was more indirect. I think the only thing holding him back is the fact that Iâm already getting chewed up, or he knows weâll go back and forth in the same endless merry-go-round until one of us falters and we realize we havenât gotten anywhere at all.
âItâs my job to protect you,â she counters, bitterly. And for just a moment, I can see past that hard gaze of hers into something softer, something more vulnerable. âI shouldâve pulled you the moment you left that hospital. God, Y/N, you managed to shatter your fucking vertebra.â
âBut Iâm fine,â I nearly laugh. âI healed from that and I healed from this.â
âYeah? And what if you donât? Huh?â she pushes. âWhat if one day something happens and you donât come back from it?â
  âThatâs not going to happenââ
She reaches over the table, grabs my arm, and rips my sleeve up. She doesnât say anything as she looks between the thin line going down my arm and at me. The slice Jo gave me is mostly healed now, bits and pieces of it still red and ugly, while other parts are healed over with new skin that's paler and slightly raised.Â
âDid you really think I wouldnât know about this?â she asks.
âI can explain,â I rush out.
âNo, thatâs not the point,â she counters, releasing my arm. âYou got hurt again. How many more times is it going to take for you to understand this isnât the life for you?â
âThen what life is for me, huh? A job I can tolerate, but itâll never fulfill me? Finding someone to love me, except I could never tell them the truth about anything, so Iâll have to wonder if they love me or the version I presented to them?â I retort, feeling a little embarrassed to be arguing in front of my friends like this. âGod, Adeline, Iâve tried, Iâve been trying my whole life to be normal. I canât go back to being like that. I wonât.â
âThat's not what Iââ she sighs. âIâm worried about you. One day youâll go to sleep and wonât wake up, and thereâs nothing Iâd be able to do.â
âThatâs not going to happen, Adeline,â I say, finding her hand.
âYou donât know that,â she shakes her head. âYou donât know what it was like to wait between time until you needed me, only to have started living when I found you. What will become of me if I lose you?â
It feels like a punch to the gut, like the wind is pushed from my lungs.
âWhatâs she talkinâ about?â Dean asks quietly.Â
âYou wanted to wait until it was a better time to tell them,â she reminds me. âItâs time.â
âRight,â I exhale, turning my gaze onto the Winchesters, who had been quiet this whole time. âAdeline isnât just my friendâŚsheâs, uh, how do I say this?â
âYour girlfriend?â Dean finishes, looking between us with wide eyes.Â
  âWhat?! No. What?â
âEw, no. I mean, sheâs hot and all, but thatâd be weird,â Adeline answers, face scrunched in clear disgust. I never thought Iâd ever see her wearing a face like that when talking about screwing women.
âYeah, thatâs like shamed upon between a witch and their familiar. Thereâs a close bond that connects them, so to have a relationship like that would beâŚâ
âIncestuous,â she finishes my explanation for me.
âWhat? No. Thatâd mean weâre related, which we're not.â
  âBut itâs taboo like that.â
âWait. Wait. Wait. Wait,â Dean stammers. âBack up. Your familiar? As in Hocus Pocus?â
âMore, the Salem to my Sabrina,â I correct, tucking a piece of hair behind my ear. âExcept sheâs clearly not stuck in cat form.â
âCan you turn into a catâŚ?â Sam asks carefully.
She stares at him blankly, unamused as she takes a sip of her drink. She rolls her shoulders back, and her grey eyes begin to glow like the moon at midnight. Then, just like that, sheâs no longer a human; instead, a black cat is sitting on the wooden chair.Â
âOh, god, thatâs freaky,â Dean mutters, staring wide-eyed at her with a hanging jaw.
Her eyes narrow, ears going sideways.Â
âHowâs that possible?â Sam asks, exasperated.
âHowâs anything possible?â I counter. I donât really have an explanation for something like this; itâs just what happens. âIsnât she cute, though?â I ask, patting the top of her soft head. Her gaze turns to me, and she lifts her arm to swing at me, her paw hitting my arm without claws.
âAlright, sorry, youâre really tough and evil and not at all adorable,â I answer, backing off with my hands in defeat.Â
She settles back down, sitting with a sassy shift of her shoulders and her head tilted up.Â
âWhy didnât you tell me about this?â Dean grumbles. âIâve known her for how many years?â
They had met before, a couple of times actually, because itâs impossible not to have your best friend and your other best friend meet, especially when you have a fat crush on one of them.Â
âIt just didnât come up?â I answer, unconvincingly, my voice pitching up.
ââJust didnât come upâ my ass,â he retorts a little harshly. âYou kept this from me.â
  Heâs right.
âHey, donât get mad at her,â Adeline suddenly says, back in her human form, arms resting on the table as she points at him. âShe was sworn to secrecy by me. âDidnât want anyone knowing. As a matter of fact, besides B/n, youâre the only ones who know. You want an award for that, too, Winchester?â
âOh, fuck off,â Dean scuffs, rolling his eyes.
âSit on it and swivel, asshole,â she bites right back, putting her middle finger up at him. This was perfectly normal for them, though I couldnât tell you where this sort of beef came from.Â
âDude, you throw up hairballs,â he points out with an amused smirk. I have to say, theyâre taking this surprisingly well.Â
âI do not!â she snaps, fist hitting the table.Â
âThatâs a sensitive topic for her,â I cut in, patting her shoulder. She brushes my arm off, glaring at me sideways as if I had betrayed her by saying that.Â
âSo what you meant by âwaitingâ and your job being to protect her, you meant it literally,â Sam asks, though it comes out more like a statement as he connects the dots.
âOf course I did,â she answers. âMy existence revolves around her; keeping her safe and helping her with whatever she needs.â
A smile quirks on Samâs lips, âSounds likeââ
Dean kicks him hard beneath the table.
âTo have a familiar is rare; most witches donât. And if word gets out, it can become dangerous for them,â I explain, ignoring their odd behavior. âUnfortunately, the line between familiar and servitude can blur for some, though that isnât the case for us because that's weird, and Iâm not a horrible person. Thatâs why she isnât with me 24/7 and has her own job and life.â
âI got lucky,â she muses, raising her eyebrows.
âSo howâd you meet?â Sam asks.
âShe was lost and needed guidance,â Adeline answers with a shrug. âIt was a couple of weeks after her mom died, and I just showed up.â
âShe came to me in her cat form, so obviously I started feeding her and hanging around outside to keep her company. Then, not too long afterwards, she revealed who she was,â I explain, recalling the day I was in the backyard crying when a random black cat wandered in and started rubbing against my arm.
âYou eat cat food?â Dean laughs immaturely. ââIs it any good?â
âIâm going to boil you alive and feed your remains to the police,â she threatens, monotone and yet oh so serious.Â
âJesus,â Dean mutters, glancing away, his amusement disappearing.
âIâm so confused,â Sam laughs. âNo offense, but this doesnât make any sense. I mean, how can you turn into an animal? Does that mean youâre a cat who can turn into a human, or a human that can turn into a cat?â
âIf it makes you feel any better, we donât really understand it either,â I admit. âItâs just the way it is, even though itâs all twisty turny.â
âThereâs nothing on it in her mom's book or the ones from her grandparents,â she adds. ââGuess none of them had familiars.â
âArenât we helpful?â I muse, popping another fry into my mouth.
  âNot at all,â Sam mumbles.
