Back Yards of East Point, Georgia by Haley Murphy
shot with a Cambo 4x5 and Canon 70D
This project was inspired by the Wieland collection in Atlanta, Georgia and new topographics. I wanted to explore nature and man’s hand inside of it but from a personal perspective. Instead of a public parking lots or buildings birthing itself from a forest I wanted to lift the skirt of peoples backyards and see what they were hiding from me .Unlike Joe Deal’s back yard topographics I tried to refrain from photographing the actual houses affiliated with the back yards and focus only on the pearl within the oyster. The overlooked tiny houses nestled in back yards; most of them forgotten. I learned a few things in this venture; First, what I found was the trust of many strangers. In a neighborhood that is not considered safe, one must be very trusting to have a random stranger enter their back yard. Second, the diversity and beauty of each individuals take on “small house structure” was fascinating to me. This project is far from being finished, but I am excited to open this storybook and show you the first couple pages of a love story between me and my neighborhood’s private parts.
