The way I see it, Stiles and Derek come home that day and have to face 1) a disappointed father (in-law), 2) a horrified pack, and 3) an extremely confused caterer. (The sheriff is somehow the easiest of all three to handle. Stiles–who hated the caterer since the time he laughed at the suggestion of having curly fries during the cocktail hour–insists that he’s not surprised.)

They put the pack off for a day because Derek has no idea what to say to them. Where the sheriff was reproachful but sympathetic, the pack– There are things he’ll have to say and things he’ll want to say and there are more plans that have to be made than he can handle thinking about, but what it really comes down to is that Derek wants to keep them just a little longer.

(Also, as Stiles takes care to remind him, they have consummating to do.)

When they finally break the news, Cora and Erica seethe (”How can they just change your classification? You have a pack!” Cora snarls, and Erica says, “How can they expect to pass us around like we’re fucking dolls? Maybe I don’t want another alpha.”) and the rest listen in stunned silence as Stiles reads off the official procedure from the Status Revocation Handbook.

Then, when he gets to the subsection detailing pack relocation and how most packs will usually agree to take in only one new wolf, there’s chaos–a lot of yelling, a lot of rapid-fire questions, a lot of everybody talking as loudly as possible all at the same time–and it only stops when Stiles tucks his fingertips into his mouth and whistles.

“Satomi was a friend of my mother’s,” Derek explains when everyone finally settles, “and she lives nearby. I think she– I think she would take all of us. As a favor. She takes in a lot of packless wolves.”

“We’re not packless,” Boyd says with a frown. “You might not be an alpha, but that doesn’t mean we’re not still your pack.”

Derek’s heart is a lump in his throat, and it’s the first time he’s felt remotely at home in his own skin since his reclassification.

(”I don’t understand,” he admits that night, body curled against Stiles’ side as fingers stroke through his hair. “I felt like an alpha, and they felt like they were mine. So did you.”

“Hey,” Stiles scolds. “I still am. We’re mated. I’m as much yours as you are mine.”

“Did I feel like yours? Before?” 

“Of course you did.”

“Then I don’t understand,” Derek says. “How could it all be wrong?”)

Derek and Stiles’ certificate review is conducted three days after his official beta classification is filed by his doctor, and everyone waits anxiously on the steps of City Hall until Stiles bursts through the doors and yells, “Guess whose dick is equally capable of consummation, motherfuckers!?” 

Derek has to submit the papers for pack relocation the afternoon before he and Stiles leave for Hawaii. 

In the eyes of the law, he and his betas are allied with Satomi’s pack–and it’s okay. She isn’t interested in using their numbers to build her pack’s strength, and she doesn’t ask them for anything more than casual loyalty. It isn’t terrible, and it certainly isn’t the worst that could have happened, but it’s an adjustment they’re all still bitter about having to make. 

He supposes that’s why he isn’t surprised to find Stiles hunched over a stack of books one night when he was supposed to be paying the electric bill.

“Can you still feel them?” he asks when Derek pokes his head into the bedroom. “The betas. Can you still feel them?”

Derek nods.

“So the pack bond is still intact,” he says happily, and Derek blinks as he scribbles something in his notebook. “Hear me out, okay? This is sort of half-baked and I didn’t want to get your hopes up until I was absolutely sure, but I think we could have a case to petition for pack reinstatement.” 

Derek raises an eyebrow, heart thudding in his chest, and Stiles clicks his tongue.
