A snippet of the Battle of Herawyth
Before reading this snippet, I've copied the descriptions of Snars and Sables from earlier chapters so you know what they are, also a little more about Snars is that they're kind of like a black bear crossed with a hog.
"....itâs black fur heaving up and down, itâs mouth gnarled over itâs gums, protruding sharp, yellow teeth, itâs white eyes glowing, itâs long ears pressed back as though ready to attack, itâs four strong legs hunched as it listened to itâs prey, itâs solid rock feet with three crooked claws gripping the ground."
"...the yellow grass began to crunch and wither beneath the giant claws that trampled it, tall black legs grew up from the feet, like that of a horse, but far more stronger, atop these legs rested a body of black with thick lines of rusty red fine fur, the neck stretched out with a black spiked mane leading up to a head that bowed down low with the line of red fur climbing up the side of itâs neck and pouring down to a stop at the nose, itâs eyes were bright yellow slits and in itâs mouth were four sharp teeth like daggers."
Snippet of Chapter 16; The Battle of Herawyth
The giants had not yet reached the city, but they raced across the fields on giant Snars led by Alqual, his companions however did not ride with him this time, Rhoda and Aranrhod remained at the fort.
However riding on a line of Sables behind the rank of Snars was another rank of giants, led by Thorin.
Amidst the giants were red bears, enormous creatures, much bigger than any horse, Snar or Sable with snarling jowls, that were dragging huge catapults. There were particularly taller giants loading the catapults with boulders and hurling them into the city.
The boulders hit the towers with tremendous force, crashing holes into the sandy stone buildings and knocking archers from the tower tops down to their deaths.
Iowerth looked up at the city in shock. The archers lined along the outer wall looked out towards the mass of giants heading for them. One of the archers shouted down to Iowerth,
 âTheyâve got red bears!â
A lot of the army that heard him felt their stomachs clench, they tightened their grip on their weapons.
Another boulder came hurtling through the air, hitting a tower.
Iowerth held up his sword to the archers atop the outer wall,
 âFire!â he screamed.
The archers began firing into the giants. A general of the archers ran along the wall, he looked across to the towers, signalling for them to fire. A torrent of arrows flew through the air towards the giants, who merely pulled them out and kept riding.
A young boy ran along the edge of the wall, pouring oil into a very thin trough, he reached the end where a torch hung in a bracket, he tore it out, throwing it into the trough, a speeding flame lit the oil along the wall. The archers dipped their arrows in and aimed high, firing further into the giants.
The flames pierced flesh and threw giants from their Snars, other took down Snars, searing their fur apart.
More boulders hit the towers, causing debris to cascade into the city.
The archer general looked out at the bears, then turned to the archers atop the towers,
âThe bears! Aim for the bears!â he screamed. The archers began sending flaming arrows into the red bears.
On the ground Iowerth walked along the line,
âAim for their throats and vital organs! Their flesh is stronger than ours, if you can bring them down with one blow do so, before they bring you down!â he reached his spot out front again.
âBring down the Snars or they will feast on you!â the men took a strong stance, holding their weapons ready. Â
Iowerth turned and shouted into the army,
âCoromoran!â there was no answer. An archer shouted back,
A blind fury lit inside Iowerth, he swallowed hard,
 âWhen they hit, fire!â
He turned around and looked up and down the line at his long swordsmen,
The front line walked forward a few paces and took up a strong stance.
Iowerth lowered his voice so only they could hear,
âHerawyth has never been breached. Letâs show these animals whyâ
Alqual raced forward, he lifted his sword,
âCharge!â he bellowed.
A line of Snar riders thundered toward the line.
Iowerth braced himself as a Snar rider headed straight for him.
He stared at the Snar, knowing he had to overcome it before taking on the giant.  He remembered what Aidan told him about the Snar attack. He looked up just as the Snar pounded forward, Iowerth crouched low then jumped with all his might, crashing his foot down onto the Snarâs head, then flying through the air, he spun, heaving his sword and taking the giantâs head clean off. The body fell from the Snar, overhead a torrent of arrows flew into the oncoming giants, as Iowerth landed on the Snarâs back, he swung the creature around to face the giants.
Several of his men had pulled the giants down and climbed atop the Snars, whilst others were being torn apart, their blood spraying through the air.
The Snars pushed through to the line of axe men. Mora stood with two axes, he saw Amhar fighting ahead, a Snar was headed straight for him, with all his might Mora flung an axe through the air into the head of the Snar, killing it instantly. He pulled another axe from his back and ran, swinging into two Snars. Another rider headed for Amhar, he dropped to the floor and swung his sword out, slicing through the legs of the Snar, bringing it down, the rider was flung through the air, landing on his back, before he could stand, a blade sliced through his throat, decapitating him, as Aidan lifted his machete standing above the corpse. He let out a cry and threw himself into the thick of the battle.
