He doesn’t feel like himself. His… affliction only really affects him at night, but it’s an all day affair. From the time he wakes up, he’s not really in his body. He has control over what he does in the way you have control over a video game. Like he’s watching behind a screen.

He purposefully doesn’t go anywhere, do anything, or see anyone on these days. He doesn’t know what he’ll do. He has to be careful on a normal day–not that it’s difficult to hold back from biting people on a daily basis, unless he’s getting down and dirty–but it’s especially important on full moons because of how out of control he feels.

On these days, all day, and typically the day after as well, he has full body aches. His body becomes so weak. Even if he wanted to go out, he doesn’t know if he could. He just lolls around in his apartment, oscillating between sweating and shaking and trying to distract himself in bed and chugging water on the floor of his kitchen. 

Schrodinger hides from him on full moons. Like he knows something is wrong with Dylan, that Dylan can’t be trusted. It’s lonely, but at least he knows Schrodinger is safe. 

A little before the sun starts to set, Dylan leaves. The only time he leaves his apartment during the full moon. He goes out into the forest behind his complex and walks and walks until he gets to the spot he picked the first time he came out here. It’s away from all the trails, from streets, from everything. He knows he will stay alone here. He brings a backpack with two water bottles: one that he drinks before he turns, and one for after. He always takes off his clothes and stores them in the backpack overnight. It felt weird to be naked in “public” the first few times, but he’s used to it now. There’s no use ruining his clothes.

It is now that Dylan’s body is least his own. He is so wrought with pain and aching he’s barely conscious. Eventually, from the far away place he is, he feels his skin crawl and crack, he feels his muscles tense as they prepare for what happens to them, he feels his bones realign. It happens in a matter of minutes, but every time, it’s its own eternity. 

She drags herself out of bed, pulls on her sneakers, and quietly heads out, double checking on the way that the kids are all, in fact, asleep. The coast is clear. 

Before she gets to the docks, she stops by the bathrooms to freshen up. It doesn’t really matter, but she insists on always looking as presentable as possible, even if it’ll get ruined in a few minutes.

It’s the thought that counts.

The dock lights are already on when she gets there, as always. She knows Jacob gets too restless about it to wait until their agreed meeting time. It’s endearing.

Shortly after they got together, they realized it was going to be a miserable summer if they spent every sexual encounter tiptoeing around the kids and the other counselors. Neither of them wanted to scar the poor little kids anyway. So this is what they came up with.

Tuesdays and Saturdays they meet at the docks at 1 am, sharp. Except Jacob always gets there early, which is okay. And it goes, you know, exactly how it’s going now:

Jacob kisses Emma first. They end up somewhere–sometimes on one of the tables, usually on the ground–tonight, it’s on the ground. They get undressed just enough for their purposes, though tonight Emma decides to take her shirt all the way off. It’s long sleeves, even though it’s hot outside. She’s already sweating.

They take their time, as much as they can during their after hours meetup. Jacob always takes his time with foreplay, using his fingers or his mouth to make sure she’s properly ready. Sex with Jacob is genuinely some of the best sex she’s had. He’s so patient, even though he’s also very eager. 

Emma kisses him. She wraps her arms around him and grabs at his shirt, feels his tense muscles under his shirt, under his skin. She feels the effort he puts into loving her.

When he fucks her, he keeps a hand under her head so she doesn’t hit it on the hard docks. It would be easier to get a rolled-up towel or something, but by the time she gets here, they’re both ready to get down to business. She likes being held close to him anyway. 

He always uses condoms, which she appreciates, and also found it very funny when she found out he brought a whole pack to camp. They did, she guesses, end up being useful. 

Tonight, Emma comes first. Jacob put his other hand, the one not cradling her head, between her legs and she was gone. He pulls out and she watches him jack himself off while she catches her breath, admiring the illumination of his pleasured face in the moonlight as he comes. 

She sits up and they make out lazily during the come-down, Jacob in her lap. Jacob hands Emma her shirt after and she smiles at him.

“That was good,” she says. They both know it’s always good.
