Gunfire rang out in the bowling alley as screams echoed throughout the building. Kenny dove behind the bowling ball shelves along with his friends. Catching a glimpse around the corner of the shelf he saw his mom run out of the building with all the other patrons.Â
âThanks mom...â Kenny mumbled
Looking around all that was left was himself, his friends, and the remaining members of the Umbrella Academy. This was not how Kenny expected to spend his birthday. Granted, having his birthday party at a bowling alley was in no way his idea. His ideal birthday would be getting drunk with his friends and play just dance at Deanâs house but obviously that wasnât happening. Kenny wasnât expecting both the world to end and to be getting shot at in a bowling alley but it was better than the actual party he had been having. As the Umbrella Academy fought back against the gunmen, Kenny gathered in a circle with his friends.Â
"We gotta stop them," Addison says
Kenny agreed with that. Not only would it be the first really fun thing heâs done on his birthday but he couldnât just let these guys run around with guns shooting at people. Youâve all done this before, it would be no big deal. Kenny looked towards you as the leader of the group to hear what you had to say.
"Not this time." You command firmly
Not this time? Kenny didnât understand. You had never backed down from a fight before.
"We've fought gunmen before on multiple occasions, we can handle these guys." Lucas states
"No!" You shouted "These are not just some run-of-the-mill criminals. These bastards are trained assassins. They will kill you without hesitation and I will not have that."
There was an emotion in your voice that he had never heard before. Fear. You were scared for them, for their lives. The world was falling apart and you were worried about them. Kenny and the rest of the group all looked at each other, acknowledging the same thing. This was a non-negotiable situation. Everyone looked back at you as the gunfire rained over you all. Kenny noticed as Dean stared at you, the look of worry for you on his face was reminiscent of the time you were in a coma. If anyone in the group knew what you were thinking it was him, and he didnât look happy.
"What's the plan?" Dean asks
You took a breath in and let it out. You did this anytime things were dire, which wasnât often but this was serious. Looking at your friends you explain,
"I'm going to use my powers to get over to that wall and try to manipulate it so you can pretty much platform 9 and 3/4's it and just run through. When I send the signal and you will know what it is, I want Sonata, Spotlight, and Necrotic to run out first because as much as great as you are in this situation you are the most defenseless.âÂ
Kenny knew you were right. Sure you had taught them all combat skills but up-close combat in the middle of a hailstorm of bullets was not going to be effective. Kenny gave a small nod in your direction along with Addison and Viktoria.
Next up I want Hercules and Whiplash to leave."Â
Bren and Lucas looked at each other for a quick second and you looked towards Dean.
"Marksman, you'll be last because your ranged archery attacks will help give cover to everyone else if need be."
Everyone took what you had explained in. Typically each and every one of them would press harder to go into battle but given everything they knew your plan was best. You were their leader and they were going to follow. Kenny watched as you prepped yourself to jump over to the wall. He could see the nervousness grow on your face. Was it because of the gunfire and you were worried for their safety? Was it the fact that the world could end? He didnât know. All Kenny hoped is that all of you could get out of here safely. The group watched as you transported yourself over to the wall and placed a hand on it. Rearranging themselves they lined up by group behind the shelves. Viktoria, Addison and Kenny all prepped to run to the wall together, using each other as cover. Shortly after a knife flew by and hit the side of the shelf. It was time to go. Keeping low, the three of them sprinted towards the wall and through it. Kenny made sure that Viktoria and Addison go through first before going through himself. As he exited the wall the last thing he saw was Klaus picking up his birthday cake a chucking it at at one of the gunmen.
âMy cake...â Kenny said sadly
Addison and Viktoria stood close to each other as they waited for the others to come through the wall. Within seconds Lucas and Bren showed up. Addison ran to Lucas and he held her tightly. All of them stood outside together looking at the wall for you and Dean to show up.Â
Inside the alley Dean had watched all of his friends run out through the wall and with a throw of a knife once more Dean knew it was his turn. As he approached the wall, Dean stopped and crouched down so he was eye level with you. He knew what was going on in your head. Of course he did, he was your âtwinâ.
"Dean what are you doing? You need to go. Get to safety." You state
"I want you to come with us." He states
Dean saw as you looked towards the Umbrella Academy. They were fighting as hard as they could against these masked shooters. He saw the look on your face and knew what you had in mind but he wished it wasnât the case. Looking back towards him you replied,
"I can't do that, they need me. I need to help them stop the apocalypse." You explain
And there was the confirmation. You had no intention of going with them, you were going to stay with the Academy. Dean knew it was selfish of him to want you to leave them, especially if the world was on the line, but you matter to him and the rest of your friends. He couldnât lose you again.
"But we need you too," Dean begged
"I'm sorry...I can't. Make me a promise though." you respond
He didnât know what you had in mind but whatever it was he would do it. He would do it for you.
"Anything." Dean answers
"Promise you'll keep everyone together. If this world ends I at least want to know that none of you were alone." You say
Dean didnât like the sound of your words. Were you that unsure of if there would be a tomorrow? Dean refused to think of that as a possibility. There would be an April 2nd. He would see you again. They all would. Trying to be hopeful, Dean questions,
"And if the world survives?"
"Go to school tomorrow. We'll meet at my locker." You state
Dean just stared blankly, unmoving. He saw the emotion in your eyes and the beginnings of tears forming.Â
"go..." you forced out trying not to fully cry
Dean knew you wanted him to leave but if the world was going to end then he wasnât going to leave you here without your friends.
"One second," Dean replied reaching into his pocket
"Dean please-" you begged
Dean pulled his wallet out and opens it up. Looking down into it he saw what he was looking for. It was a photo of all of you together at your prom. What was only two weeks ago now felt like a distant memory. Extending the photo put to you, you take it. As you look at the photo Dean starts to get choked up. This could be the last time he ever saw you. He tries to keep his voice steady but the pain cuts through as he explains,
"You're our family, so no matter what happens tonight...you won't be without us,"
You look at him with a weak smile and sadness in your eyes as you say softly,
"Goodbye, Dean."
Dean takes one last look at you and with his vision starting to blur he replies,
"Goodbye, (Y/N)."
With that, he turned away and rushed through the wall. On the other side there was muffled yelling coming from the group.
âWhy arenât they out yet?â Bren asks
âWe need to go back and get them.â Addison exclaims
âNo, (Y/N) wouldnât want us to do that.â Viktoria states
âBut no man gets left behind!â Lucas replies
As they argue on what to do Kenny notices Dean step through the wall. Alone. The rest of the group notices as well and turns towards him.Â
âDean, whereâs (Y/N)?â Lucas questions
The pained look on Deanâs face is evident and in the light of the moon tear streaks can be seen on his cheeks.
âSheâs going to stop the apocalypse.â Dean replies quietly
âNo, we have to go get her.â Addison states as she tries to walk back to the entrance of the building
Dean steps in front of her stopping her in her tracks.Â
âAddison. She wants us safe and she made me promise her that we all stay together.â Dean explains weakly
âSo what do we do now?â Bren asks
âI donât know.â Dean says before turning to Kenny and asking âWhat do you want to do birthday boy?â
Kenny didnât say anything. Instead, he walked over to the wall that all of them had ran through and placed a hand on it. It was solid and on the other side was his friend. He didnât want to do much for his birthday anymore. Not because the world was ending, although that was a factor, but more so because you were putting yourself in harms way to save them. The last time you did that...well things werenât good. Taking a deep breath Kenny turns around as looks back at the group. In an emotionless tone he replies,
âLetâs go back to your place and get drunk.â
Everyone made their way to Deanâs car and got in. The drive back to Deanâs house was silent and the air felt heavy. A day of celebration was now filled with dread. When they arrived at his house, Dean unlocked the front door and they all stepped inside heading to the living room. Deanâs parents and brothers had gone out of town to visit his aunt, uncle and cousins, but Dean had stayed behind to go to Kennyâs now bullet-ridden party. Kenny quickly raided the liquor cabinet as he had done plenty of times before at Deanâs house and many of the others follow suit. They all sat around silently sipping on their drinks hoping a buzz would kick in soon to lighten the mood. As Dean looked around at his friends sullen faces he knew that you would be upset to know that they were so blue. If these really were all of your last moments you would want them to be filled with joy. Standing up from his seat the rest of the group look towards him,
âListen, I know weâre all worried about (Y/N) but she wouldnât want us to be sad that sheâs not here. Sheâd want us to still have a good time.â
âWhat do you suggest?â Viktoria asked
âWant to play Just Dance, Kenny?â Dean asked
Kenny for the first time since the night went to shit, smiled. Downing the rest of his drink he placed the cup on the table before standing up and replying,
âIâm gonna kick your ass on Time Warp.â
âIn your dreams.â Dean replied giving him a shove
Kenny noticed as smiles started to return to the faces of his friends. Dean was right, this is exactly what you wouldâve wanted for them. They put on Just Dance and rotated places with each song. During one of the songs Viktoria had wandered into the kitchen and found a small cake sitting on the kitchen counter and some candles in a drawer. Bringing them out to the group she suggested,
âHow about you make a birthday wish?â
Kenny nodded his head. He knew what his wish would be. He wanted you to return to them, safe and sound. Viktoria set up the candles on the cake for him and then asked,
âDoes anyone have a lighter?â
Immediately Kenny pulled one out of his pocket and started to light the candles.
âOf course you have one on you.â Bren commented
âYou never know when youâll need one.â Kenny replied
Once all the candles were lit the group gathered around Kenny and started to sing to him.
âHappy birthday to you, happy birthday to you,â
As they did so Dean noticed something outside the window and while all of his friends were focused on Kenny he looked and saw what was going on outside. Up in the sky flaming chunks of rock started hurtling towards the earth. The moon had been shattered into pieces. As he looked at the scene playing out he knew there would be no school tomorrow. This was it. As he stared his friends continued to sing,
âHappy birthday dear Kenny,â
Dean downed the rest of his drink. Taking a deep breath he closed the curtains and turned back to look at his friends.Â
The Handler: I amâŚawareâŚthat we had our differences. And that I may have kidnapped all of you in order to harness your abilities for myself. But we all did well, didn't we? I'm sure we can look past our differences and move on, right?
[long, drawn-out silence]
Five: I'm still happy I shot you.
Reader: Yeah me too.
Bren: Should've aimed for the face.
Kenny: Yeah.
Addison: Might've made her look much better.
Viktoria: Not that it would've made any difference anyway.
Dean: The only thing that would be better is erasing you from existence entirely.
Lucas: We'd sleep like babies because your face wouldn't be there to cause nightmares.
The Handler: Listen here you little shits I can have you all killed in an instant.
Kenny: Then do it bitch! I donât want to be here.
Viktoria: Yeah, kill us you coward.
Bren: Sheâs too pathetic to kill us.
Addison: Even if she managed to, she wouldnât be able to do it in a meaningful way.
Lucas: Honestly, sheâs more killable than we are.
Dean: Yeah, Reader could probably just think of blowing her up and sheâd be gone in seconds.
Reader: Oh I wouldnât blow her up, thatâs too quick. Too kind. Iâd slowly tear her apart bit by bit on the molecular level, and listen as she begged me to stop, but I would keep going anyway as her organs slowly started to fail one by one until nothing worked anymore, and her whole body shut down. Then Iâd rip out her heart and blow that up before setting the deceased witch on fire.
Five:Â I fall in love with you more every single day.
