I was inspired to make this map of Amsterdam when I saw this lovely map of the network by Jaap Knevel. Amsterdam’s system is really cool from a design perspective, because it’s small but not overly simple, meaning it’s relatively easy to represent and really fun to optimize. So this was quite the fun exercise, and I’m really happy with how it turned out! My favorite part is Sloterdijk—I think I might have found the best possible way to compactly represent that station.

After talking to a Dutch friend, I decided to also make a map of Rotterdam in the same style! I found it to be a much harder system to map—in part because it has twice as many stations as Amsterdam and has routes going as far as Den Haag and Hoek van Holland—but I’m still decently happy with the results. I kept the map to the same height as the Amsterdam map and exactly twice the width.
