Lisa takes us through her neighborhood behind the Carrefour complex on Quyang Lu. She takes us from the Carrefour through her quiet neighborhood. Her kindergarten, elementary, and middle school are in the city block she grew up in so the better part of her childhood took place here. Ever since her family moved out, she has rarely come back to visit.
The neighborhood is part of the school’s 学区房 meaning that any resident living in the immediate area can attend these schools. This usually means the rents are higher especially if the schools are good like the ones here. Her memories reveal the places where she used to play with her friends and teachers, as well as some small, but necessary, changes such as the enclosed public trash can area. The biggest change from her story are the local stores. In 2017, the streetscapes of Shanghai had a major change. All the small local stores along the streets were closed and some even demolished. Storefronts were bricked up and integrated into the residential building they shared or just left abandoned. While this alleviated a lot of traffic and people congestion throughout the city, small and unique local businesses that defined every street were now gone, changing the identity and the dynamic of the community.
I hadn’t visited the area since I made the recording in 2013, but when I went back in April (2018) with Shen Yi to take the photos for this book, the commercial areas had all been closed. As you can see on the cover, some stores hung signages out to say that they were still open behind the wall. I remembered all the small stores lining the pedestrian street beside Carrefour and along Miyun Lu. You can hear how noisy and lively things were. Now they are just invisible memories captured with the sound and story of this recording.

Walking with Terence, he shows me around his neighborhood in one of the old shanty towns, or ‘Peng Hu’ areas, near Suzhou Creek. His story reveals the raw living conditions of all residents both young and old.
The Peng Hu neighborhoods are fast disappearing within the inner ring. With property values at an all time high and the relatively poor living conditions of residents barely an eye seems to be batted when another one is lost. Because the areas are usually not historically significant, these areas are the first to go in any new developments.
Terence’s soundwalk takes place at night. The dynamic of loud and quiet was amazing, some parts were spoken almost as a whisper to match the general ambience. Parts of his story matched the eerie darkness of the area heightening the senses.
As usual, I recommend doing the walk at the same time of day as it was recorded to to match our experience. While this area is not the most glamorous in Shanghai, it does have it own unique flavor.

Secilia had gone to school here her whole life and shares her memories about the environment and how it has become an unforgettable part of her life.
Wen Miao Lu today is still a thoroughfare for young students as there are many schools along just this one street. Adolescent paraphernalia and school bookstores line the street enticing kids to spend their lunch money on the latest comic or anime video.
Amidst all of this life however is the serene Wen Miao temple where students, tourists, and locals alike can take a break from the sometimes overwhelming reality that lay just beyond its walls.
We are pleased to document and present this walk to you.

Hua Ting Lu is the birthplace of the Xiang Yang Lu market which is now located at the Science and Technology Center subway station. Nowadays it is a very quiet street connecting Chang Le Lu and Huai Hai Lu. Some clothing stores and restaurants remain as the only indication of its ancestry. Along this road Pei Hua shares an intimate memory of her past love. Their first meeting was at the KFC at the end of the road which is still there. The table where they sat was occupied when we arrived so we sat at the table behind. Softly she spoke of her feelings about a man whom she met by chance. At that moment, who would have known what the future would hold for them? The late night conversations, that memorable night after KTV, the break up, the make up, and this soundwalk.

After almost three hours of getting lost, I finally meet Lemon, her sister, and her boyfriend, Jason at Feng Jing town which is actually about one hour outside of Shanghai. Feng Jing is another ancient water town right on the Shanghai – Zhe Jiang border and its history dates back several centuries.
This small town has gone through some amazing changes. The water town area has been renovated and is more tourist friendly but still maintains its local vibe. Not as many tourists come through here as compared to some other water towns so it is still a relaxing day trip destination. This walk is one of our favorites, not only because it is the only walk we recorded that was outside of Shanghai city, but also because of the playful and animated dialog of Lemon and her sister. They talk of catching crawfish in the stream, eating Xun La Si (roast frog), and falling down stairs – all with a laugh and a smile. The sometimes mysterious alleyways, delightful views, and the easy country life make this a place not to miss.
Their dialect is a bit different from the Shanghainese spoken in the city. More Mandarin words are mixed in with a few local words that may not even sound like typical Shanghainese. It’s a pleasant reminder of how large the Shanghai province is and that there are many amazing places to visit outside of the City.

Recorded July 12, 2009 at 11:19 a.m.
Xinhua Lu is a picturesque road typical to the French Concession area of Shanghai. Lined on both sides with Parasol trees and vintage mansions of old Shanghai, one can easily mistake this for a European town. Samantha has lived along this road her entire life. In fact, many of her relatives still live in this area, which shows how important family is to her. Her memories are filled with: her family, time spent with her Grandfather, jumping across flower terraces, bakery discount bread–runs, and her precarious playground adventures resulting in a daring rescue. Xinhua Lu is truly a part of her life and her family.
This walk was one of my favorites just because of the amazing coincidences and the life that can be heard in the background. The rise and fall of gently passing cars and random conversations can be heard. When we entered her residential complex, the sounds of the basketball courts, construction, and baby crying all created an amazing picture. The finale was the icing on the cake as we happened to end up in front of a place where a piano could be heard from the street–like exit music to a great movie. It is these serendipitous moments that create the essence of these recordings. The realization that they can never be recreated is why each of these recordings are more than just sound.
I felt that this recording truly captured the life of this area. The recording itself is so dynamic and alive – yet not too overbearing as is usually assumed in an urban setting.
I hope that you enjoy this recording as much as we do.

Nanjing Xi Lu is a main road that cuts through the heart of Shanghai’s downtown area. Amidst the tall skyscrapers and flashy storefronts is a small nongtang that is pretty rare to see for this address. This story is told by my friend who still lives in the nongtang right off of Nanjing Xi Lu. He tells of a time when the scale of the area was much lower and before the Nanbei Gaojia was built, and Chengdu Lu was just a regular two-lane road. Most of the details are hard to realize since so much has changed in the area in the past 30 years. The walk takes you on a tour of an area that is at the center of everything and yet could easily be overlooked- until today.
