Beautiful Boise, ID! This is our first OFFICIAL stop on a tour that, for the next year, will have us visiting donut shops from across North America. Oh, it’s also the first stop for the national tour of THE SOUND OF MUSIC that I’m a part of. Not a bad combo!

Guru Donuts opened in 2012 and they’re gonna be around for awhile. A great shop with friendly service and a great ethos for donut making. That’s right, I said they have a donut making ethos. Using even regional flour, their mission is, “…to make donuts the old fashioned way, from scratch and made with love. We want you to giggle with joy as you experience donut enlightenment. Is that so much to ask? We rotate our seasonal flavors monthly and encourage you to try a variety as we taste test everything to ensure you experience the sweet nirvana you seek. We use only sprinkles dyed with vegetables and fruits, no artificial colors or preservatives, local when possible, and we love to collaborate with local nonprofits to make our Boise community a divine place to live.” I’m down with that. They also have a badass donut Yogi (a Dogi?) painted on their wall. BUT, are their donuts really good?

YUP. YUP YUP. I had the Old Fashioned (left) and The Hipsterberry (right). Neither lasted very long. I love a good sour cream old fashioned donut and man, this didn’t disappoint. Great texture and the icing was divine. A very dunkable donut. Now, let’s talk about The Hipsterberry. Native to Williamsburg, it’s now being found in Bushwick and other rapidly gentrifying areas of Brooklyn. I kid. It is a delectable concoction at Guru made from, “organic & wild blueberries and marionberries cooked into a jam with culinary lavender.” Mmmmm. Now, this could go awfully wrong and taste like a Violet candy if there was too much lavender. Luckily, they figured it out and have given us a really unique and delicious donut. 

Verdict: I’m going back to try as many of their flavors as I can. You should, too. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
