You chalk it up to the childhood he spent in the sterile basement lab of the hunter's guild. Nothing was freely given, everything was coveted. Survival was all about leverage -- and once he'd grown taller and stronger than any of the scientists, there was nothing left to barter. He had all the chips.
To your understanding, he's not evil per se. Perhaps lacking moral direction, but you've never seen him hurt someone unprovoked. And maybe he's not so great at small talk.
He's always been nice to you, though.
Which is why the guild believed you could corral him.
No one gave Xavier orders anymore, because no one could. The higher ups had stopped issuing direct commands after an incident that's only spoken about in euphemisms and whispers. You'd heard mentions of a "bloodbath." Unsubstantiated, of course.
But this isn't about them, or the guild. It's about all the people who are going to die without his help. The clock is ticking.
"Please, Xavier," you say, kneeling at his side as he lounges on the couch. "You're the only one strong enough to take this dungeon on."
He cracks an eye to peer at you. He'd invited you over for snacks and a movie, not hiding his displeasure when instead you launched straight into asking him to take on more work.
"You really want to expend that much energy?"
You'd had your own qualms about that very consideration. You're an A-class guide, have the highest output of anyone in the guild, but Xavier manages to drain you every session. It barely even made a dent in his need. He's like a black hole for energy.
If you had to guide him after any serious combat, it might put you out of commission for an entire week.
"Yes," you tell him anyway.
He closes his eyes again. "Forget it. I won't put either of us through that."
His tone is resolute, final. Never in your time with him have you managed to talk him out of anything once his mind is made up.
The way to get through to him isn't arguing, you've learned.
Leverage. You have it. He put it in your hands -- he's been asking you for months.
It was the one line you've never allowed yourself to cross with any of your charges -- the guild had already taken too much from you. You wouldn't give them your dignity, too.
But for Xavier --
"I'll kiss you."
He perks, sitting up to stare at you with rapt intensity. Hungry, doubtful.
"If you do this, I'll kiss you," you say again.
He throws his legs over the side of the couch so he can face you. He looms over you, those sentinel-bright eyes searching your face. Like you might change your mind.
"When?" he asks.
"When you get back."
He cocks his head. "For how long?"
His closeness, the gravity of him, makes your chest feel hot. You've never allowed yourself to imagine this with him, but now that you've sealed your fate, the reality of it all is starting to kick in.
He's clearly waiting for more stipulations, conditions, but you can't think of any. A kiss is a kiss. The beginning and end of it.
"This is just going to be a normal guiding session, Xavier," you tell him. "Nothing more, nothing less."
He glances at your lips, humming in response.
You can't help but notice that wasn't an agreement.
He stands, sidling around you. You hear the clink of his blade, the door open and close. Your monitor beeps just a minute later, letting you know your sentinel has entered the fray.
