AL GUBRA MUSCAT

Apologies to the late Yasmin Ahmad, but that movie is depressing.

I did not get a single sense of hope watching this film. There was hint of sexual assault/murder of a sex worker near the end. I cannot get past that.

And also, I never forgave her for taking Jason away.

A word on Sharifah Amani: she was criticized for a lot of things, among them: 1) saying “I sound, like, stupid, if I speak Malay, so I’ll speak English”  when accepting an award, 2) shaving her head bald for a role and 3) all of the non-mahram touching and interaction she does in her movies (Yasmin Ahmad portrays married couples as they are, not as Malaysian censors see them).

1 - People thought she thought she was too good for Malay and thus rude, and I hate it when Malay people get all defensive when someone says they're more comfortable speaking English than Malay. It's snobbery and unnecessary. I don't get a chance to speak (proper) Malay all that much so of course I'll be out of practice, like she was, so of course she didn't want to stumble over her words and grammar when she's supposed to keep her speech short, right? People speak formal Malay at awards shows, Malay people speak colloquial Malay at home and with their friends, a lot of it mixed with English and Chinese, so speaking formal Malay on the spot without a script is actually pretty hard. You see it all the time when the local Malay news interviews Malay people and you can see them struggling to come up with the 'proper' term for something they usually would say much faster in colloquial Malay or just English.

2 - The shaving her head thing is half MUSLIM WOMEN CAN'T SHAVE THEIR HEAD BALD IT'S A SIN SHE'S ABANDONING HER RELIGION and half IT'S JUST A GIMMICK SHE SHOULD BE ASHAMED TO PULL OFF SUCH A STUPID STUNT. Her mother had to defend her decision. I heard about the being bald is a sin from my family and teachers but I still don't really know why it's a sin (for women). So.

3 - When I first saw Sepet and saw how Orked's parents were portrayed (lying in the same bed, the man half naked, dancing around in their living room, playfully chasing each other..) I was like, Malaysia actually allows this to be screened? I was so amazed. COUPLES IN MALAYSIAN MOVIES DON'T EVER TOUCH EACH OTHER EXCEPT TO MAYBE BRUSH A STRAND OF HAIR AWAY OR HOLD HANDS - it was scandalous. And Gubra has this scene where Orked's husband is just in a towel and he carried her to the bathroom and they 'play-wrestled' or whatever... so that's a lot of touching. Funny thing is, I was fine with that scene played by any other actors; Chinese, Indian, Western... but Malay actors doing it just felt like 'oh God, they're so gonna get in trouble for this. SIN!!!' Yeah.

And, you might not know this, but the 'Sharifah' in her name denotes that she is (presumably) descendent from Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) grandson. It's more of a title. Her father is Syed something...
