Episode 002: Intro to the Bagua Map
Holistic Spaces Podcast, Episode 002
We’re back with a second episode! This week’s episode introduces the map used in feng shui, known as the bagua map. What is it? How do you use it? We’ll also talk about what each area of the map means. Â
The bagua map is an important tool used for adjustments in feng shui. It’s a relatively simple 3x3 grid that consultants and practitioners apply to almost any space, from a desk to a bedroom to an entire property!
Apply the bag map to any space, most easily your bedroom or even your desk, by using it as a guide to divide your space into a grid. Just stand inside the door to your space (or sit at your desk) and apply the grid radiating out from the door.Â
What’s a Gua and what do they mean?
Each separate section in the bagua grid is called a “gua,” or an area. Each area has its own meanings and symbolisms in feng shui
New Beginnings- This area is related to new beginnings of any kind, including new projects, creations and even family matters. It’s related to the season and energy of spring and symbolized by the colors green and blue, the number 3, columnar shapes and the element of yang Wood
Â
Abundance- The abundance area is related to wealth, abundance, prosperity and self worth. It is represented by the color purple, the number 4, columnar shapes (think trees!) and yin Wood.
Â
Health- This space is related to overall health. It’s in the center of the bagua, so it’s affected by, and affects, all other areas. If you’ve heard of "tai qi" (pronounced "chi"), you’ve heard of this area! The health area is signified by earthy colors (yellow, orange, brown), the number 5, square shapes and the Earth element.
Â
Benefactors- This gua is related to helpful people, benefactors, heavenly energy, travel and the father. It's symbolized by the color grey, the number 6, circles and yang Metal.
Â
Completion- This area is related to completing things, children or any sort of output. It’s also related to joy and the season and energy of autumn. The completion area is associated with the color white, the number 7, circles and yin Metal.
Â
Knowledge- The knowledge gua is related to self knowledge and self cultivation and is represented by the color dark blue, the number 8, squares and yang Earth.
Â
Recognition- This area is related to fame, passion, recognition, reputation and how the world sees you. It's also related to the season and energy of summer and is symbolized by the color red, the number 9, triangles and the Fire element.
Â
Path in Life- The final gua is related to career and the season and energy of winter as well as the color black, the number 1, wavy shapes and the Water element.
The bagua map can seem a little confusing, but it’s really a very simple concept used by feng shui practitioners all over the world! This week, take a few moments to check out your space using the bagua map. Is there an area of your life you’d like to improve? Where is that area represented in your space?
