During my Live Chat on Sunday, someone asked why some Singaporeans received GST cash rebates, while others did not. The person who asked this question felt that this was not fair since everyone in Singapore, regardless of income level, paid GST. I clarified that this is NOT the rationale for the GST cash rebates. GST cash rebates are part of a larger scheme – the GST Vouchers (GSTV) – which provides support mainly to lower-income Singaporeans with their expenses. There are 3 components to the GSTV. Not everyone will be eligible for all three, but many Singaporeans will receive at least one of the three. For example, in this month of July, all eligible HDB flatowners will receive a GST U-Save voucher of up to $95 (depending on HDB flat type), to offset their utilities bill. The amount will be directly applied to their monthly utilities bill, so be sure to check it carefully. My Fb friend posted an article on the new GST Voucher (government giving money to low income citizen), but he did not read that it state those who are 55 years and older are the only one getting this incentive. I guess the government is just stingy, cause there are many of us who is in the younger category, struggling to pay for our food and bills. So let all be thankful with what we got. That's all.
