Crimes against elevator passengers have increased significantly in recent years; the threat represents a potentially high liability to the owner of the elevator's building. The use of Rear View Mirror Camera in elevators reduces the risk of harm being perpetrated on passengers in elevators. From an asset-protection point of view, elevators represent a valuable capital investment and should be under surveillance to deter vio- lators from defacing and vandalizing them. This application describes the equipment to monitor elevator cabs and the lobby. A passenger entering an elevator with a stranger is temporarily "locked in" with the person until the elevator stops and the door opens on another floor. This serious problem has come about because almost all elevators are automatically controlled and there are no elevator operators. Years ago the elevator operator performed the function (whether consciously or not) of visual surveillance in the "locked" elevator cab. No one was ever alone in the elevator. The operator was a deterrent who could also assist in preventing molestations, robberies, and vandalism. This inherent protection now absent on most elevators is returned via the use of overt CCTV and audio intercom systems.
Applications covered in this section apply to facilities used by governmental agencies, manufacturers and industrial companies, and business services. CCTV surveillance applications include lobbies, elevators, offices, rear doors, shipping areas, hallways, and warehouses. Temporary and permanent covert CCTV systems are used in installations for viewing the general public entering a facility as well as monitoring employees. Wide-FOV optics and zoom lenses are used for parking lots and perimeter-fence-line environments. One Wireless Camera is located in the lobby close to the ceiling and looks at the entrance door and lobby with a lens having an FOV wide enough to see at least half of the lobby, the receptionist, and the front door. The second camera on the opposite wall views the other half of the lobby and the internal access door. The third camera is covertly mounted in a wall-mounted clock. Aside from choosing the equipment, choosing the camera locations is most important.
The camera/lens should not be pointed in the direction of a bright light or the sun or toward an outside door or window if possible. If the sunlight enters the camera lens directly, blooming (white areas in scene) can obliterate a part of the scene. Newvicon, silicon tube, and CCD solidstate cameras using automatic-iris lenses or CCD cameras using shuttering will compensate for light-level changes but do not always compensate well for a very bright spot in a scene. A person under surveillance who is back-illuminated by light from an exterior window or door is usually seen on the monitor as a black silhouette and cannot be identified. The video signals from the two overt GSM Security camera and covert camera in the lobby with the receptionist are transmitted to one or two monitors located at the remote security guard station. The two overt cameras view people entering and exiting through the front entrance door, most of the lobby, the receptionist, and the internal access door. The third covert camera provides backup in the event the overt cameras are rendered inoperative.
