G's Life Lessons ~ Your attitude is your reality Mindset is everything. In life we will all experience the positive things that makes life greatā¦.happiness, love, health, new relationships. But as is always the way, life is balance and inevitably we will also experience things that we perceive as negative, sadness, hatred, illness and loss. We cannot change lifeās events but we do have control over our own attitude. Wallowing in self-pity and screaming against the unfairness of it all changes nothing. This negative attitude is like having a hole in your boat, if you donāt fix it you are going to sink. How do we change our attitude? For me it starts with identifying the things I can control and making the changes needed. Set yourself goals and tasks that are achievable, start small and build up in stages, each success and task completed will give you the mental reward needed to push on. Your attitude determines your actions, your actions determine your reality⦠#gslifelessons #lifelesson #martiallifestyle #teamfalcons #coach #father #lifeschallenges #attitude #positive #goalsetting #mentalhealth (at Fighting Falcons School of Martial Arts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKYiOG3hjtv/?igshid=1is32crkkhme
G's Life Lessons ~ A parents greatest gift: To grow in character, confidence and wisdom, these are things we all wish for and yet many fail to recognise that they only happen when you face your fears and put yourself out there. As you try new things you will inevitably fail at some whilst you succeed at others. Each failure teaches you, makes you stronger, wiser. Whilst each success increases your self confidence and belief in yourself and your own abilities. You start to realise that the only thing holding you back is fearā¦the fear of failure, the fear of ridicule and even the fear of success itself. As a parent I want these things for my children and yet self belief, confidence and wisdom are not skills or gifts I can bestow. As a father all I can hope to do is to teach by example, to meet new challenges head on, to give everything 100%, to strive with conviction and determination and if I fail; to pick myself up, dust myself off and try again. Whilst we may guide our children and offer them advice, the parentās hardest job is knowing when to let go. To have the courage to restrain yourself when they fall so that they can learn the most valuable lesson of picking themselves up and trying again. It is that process of try, fail, try, succeed which tempers their character and forms the core of their self-belief. This is a parentās greatest gift, for without self-belief it is difficult to succeed in life. #gslifelessons #lifeskills #lifelessons #teamfalcons #martiallifestyle #family #parent #father #instructor #coach #chinesekickboxing #wako #wakogb (at Fighting Falcons School of Martial Arts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKPOIqoB84x/?igshid=1bgcxbar88iln
Gās Life Lessons - it is impossible to move forward positively in your life if you are holding on to the negativity in your past. Time is a great healer of wounds, but not if you keep picking at it. If you canāt leave it alone, then put a bandage on it and remove your ability to keep picking away at the wound. Only then can the wound heal. It may leave a scar and will always be present as a reminder, but it will no longer hurt and you will have removed the risk of further infection #GsLifeLessons #dealingwithit #removethenegativity #positivemind #positivesteps #positiveactions #positivechoices #friends #family https://www.instagram.com/p/BsG6bcpBGhz/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=6xam27k4l9hz
G's Life Lessons - Fear of failure
Why do some fighters underperform despite having all of the necessary skills and attributes?
In my experience I have come across this phenomenon countless times and in nearly every case it is the mental side of competition that impacts on a fighters performance. It comes down to a fear of failure and the fighters inability to manage their own expectations on themselves.
When we talk about fear impacting on competitive performance it is rare that we are talking about a fear of being hit. The natural fear of being physically hurt is something that we come to terms with on the training mats long before we hit the competition floor. The fear of failure is more insidious and one that can bubble under the radar and sometimes will not be addressed because people find many excuses not to. Examples of this are people who are adverse to belts and gradings who make the age old excuse that belts donāt really mean anything. In some ways they are correct but as a process to help students deal with pressure and anxiety gradings can be a useful tool. We see the same with students who say they are not interested in sports martial arts and competition. Sometimes itās just a lack of confidence in their own ability but sometimes the student shows great skill and ability in class but canāt or wonāt perform in a competitive environment. Why does this occur?
Experience has shown me that in nearly every case itās the āfear of failureā and the anxiety that it causes poor performance or in some cases leads the student to find excuses for why they donāt want to grade or compete at all. It can take many forms, a fear of losing when winning is associated with success and therefore losing generates feelings of inadequacy and failure; it could be a fear of letting down their parents, teammates or coaches; it may stem from peer acceptance, that others in their team will view them as failures in their sport; it may be the fear of embarrassment in that they donāt want to risk performing badly in front of others; a fear of not living up to other expectations and thereby losing their respect or acceptance; the fear of making mistakes and not being the perfect athlete they train so hard to be.
This āfear of failureā that all of us have in some form or another is something that must be faced. The saying is that if you face your fears then the death of that fear is certain. Itās a little bit more complex than that but you get the point. In my experience the fear and anxiety never truly go away but by facing my fears and putting myself out there on the mats I have learned to deal with my anxieties have become ācomfortable with being uncomfortableā. It has not been a quick process and I have experienced my fair share of losses and failures along the way. But in time you learn to deal with the pressure, you learn to control your emotions and to use them to raise your game to another level.
My ability to deal with stress and anxiety has helped me in competitive sports and more importantly it has helped me in life. Be it exams or interviews, public speaking, presentations, sales, project management or coaching, allowing fear to control my life would of been disastrous and I truly believe that without Martial Arts I would be a very different person today.
So why do I make gradings mandatory, why is competition experience at advanced level a requirement to get a black belt. Because it teaches you to use failure as a tool to becoming a better person rather than allowing failure and the fear or failure to limit you.
Be a black belt in life and get comfortable being uncomfortable because learning and growth only starts where your comfort zone ends.
