I usually watch Joe’s videos. I have for years. It’s early in the morning and I am tired and grumpy and I am probs overreacting but 🤷‍♀️

I only made it about 1 minute in. We wrapped up the worst intro I have seen in a Be Smart video and missed some huge big info.

I wanted to be such a Karen about it in the comments but I decided to just post that comment here in a vent post instead:

Years of trust building on this channel to open up a video and have my existence be called a “complicated problem” by a researcher in the first 45 seconds is probably one of the worst experiences I have had with any of my regular-watch channels on youtube.

Furthermore, a full minute into the video and NOT A SINGLE PERSON has mentioned the most recent, inflationary change in diagnostic rates: the changes in diagnostic criteria in the new DSM. That’s a big flub, and makes the beginning of this video VERY misrepresentative of reality and the reasons that most medical professionals are giving for the increases in diagnosis over the last several years. It’s very hard to have statistically relevant science being done when the boundaries of what are even considered autism have been in so much rapid change over the last 2 decades.

The weirdly obsessive paradigm of trying to “find the cause” is the only complicated problem I see here.

Can we please stop trying to find an answer for a cause and just talk about how to adjust society to better accommodate us? Stop trying to find a way to prevent us from existing in the first place and just accept us.

I’ve never been disappointed in one of Joe’s videos, and I am sure I will eventually come back to this and watch it. But I will admit it is very disappointing to have to leave this comment and close the video this time. It’s pretty disheartening to see the institutions I thought were supposed to be championing us, falling deeper into culture war losses. This is the exact response that anti-vax airheads and The Secretary of Roadkill are expecting and hoping for: A long detailed diatribe instead of just saying “autistic people exist, they need these things, and we’re gonna do those things and everyone just has to deal with it”

Anyway this is probably just me being way too frustrated at something that is probably super enlightening, probably explains better why we expanded diagnostic criteria, and a bunch of other good info…
