So, some of you might remember a couple of years ago when I became a homeowner and determined that mowing grass was for chumps and I began undertaking a plan to reduce the lawn and increase the amount of native and edible plants in my little slice of suburbia. That year, doubled the depth of two established planting areas. This year, with a lot of help, I’ve cut out even more.
This is the back flower bed, what I consider to be my “cottage garden.” The brick line shows what the new depth of the bed will be, I just need to lay down a few layers of newspaper to deal with the grass and weeds. I’ve also made use of my wood chipper and have mulched this bed and the herb garden with all the fallen and pruned branches from my own yard instead of buying dyed mulch. Still a long way to go, but I’m so happy to have made it this far!
Linum lewisii (Prairie or Lewis’s Flax). This is the sight that greeted me yesterday morning. I love this plant. Even though the flowers will drop their petals in the afternoon, the morning show and feathery foliage. Make it an outstanding plant for a dry sunny spot. And watching the hungry bumblebees enjoy this abundance isn’t bad either. #nativeplants #nativegardens #grownative #grow_native #gardens #whynotplantit #gardening #gardeningwithnatives (at Happy Apple's Farm)
If you live in the Midwestern US, this #FridayFlower should look familiar: Echinacea purpurea, or purple coneflower, is native to most of the Eastern U.S. and is often used in landscaping. Its long-lasting purple flowers attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. In the fall, goldfinches eat the seeds. And yes, this is the same plant that is sometimes used medicinally for humans. A very versatile flower!⠀ ⠀ From A flora of North America illustrated by coloured figures, drawn from nature. By William P.C. Barton. Philadelphia : M. Carey & Sons, 1821-23. Surrounded by seedlings. The greenhouse is just the way I like it...absolutely full of life. #lovemyjob #greenhouselife #greenhouse #nativeplants #grownative #spring #propagation (at Happy Apple's Farm)

Variegated Jacob’s Ladder. I’ve had this one for a couple of years now. It has a reputation for creeping and spreading, but this one has been regrettably well-behaved in that aspect. I just saw the sun hitting it when I got out of the car from a coffee run and thought it looked nice today. :) #spring #flowers #grownative #nofilter https://www.instagram.com/p/CdlU4jTurP9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Decisions. I’m not sure what the shelf life of all the seeds I currently have are. Most of these are from the 2018 season so may no longer be viable. 🤷 With most of these being Ohio wildflowers, I’m fairly optimistic and most need to stratify in the cold weather of winter, so we’ll find out in the spring! #gardening #grownative https://www.instagram.com/tencrowns/p/CXUl8QrL-cd/?utm_medium=tumblr
