Group Tutorial at City Gallery, Limerick
Jim Kemmy Remembered / Exhibition
Friday/11/Nov
Today we went to the City Gallery by People’s Park.
We were given freedom to enjoy the gallery and a task to pay attention to the lighting in the gallery space and how the exhibition has been displayed. Our tutors encouraged us to make sketches and take pictures of anything that we found interesting.
On the main floor they had the exhibition Jim Kemmy Remembered. There, I was the most fascinated by the landscape paintings.
Edward McGuire, Powescourt Waterfall
Why I found these so interesting was because these big landscapes had their little people in them and they’re fun to look at. I really enjoyed these small details.
Robert Carver, Landscape (1754)
I also really enjoyed the cast bronze sculpture ‘Finnbheal’ by Oliver Sheppard so I tried to capture it in my sketch.
In this gallery room the paintings were arranged in clear themes.
I noticed the back exit was framed by portrait.
One wall was dedicated to paintings depicting the culture around the docks of Limerick, starting the wall with a painting of ‘Arthur’s Quay’ by Charles Mills.
Painter not known, Old Thomond Bridge
‘Powescourt Waterfall’ and ‘Waves and Rocks, Bundoran’ were arranged on the same wall, both being capturing the movement of water.
Another wall was dedicated to religious pieces.
