"Funny how that works... life only just started happening-"
"And Getting interesting-"
"Yeah, and getting interesting" Copia chuckled.
The cool coast wind was music in the night, and the expanse of its black water horizon pulling like a call for sleep. On the patio deck overlooking the shore, the 2nd story felt as if it were but an island floating above the sand, and the waves were something far far away, like a dream.
Milagro pulled her legs into her oversized sweater, the large knit holes still breathing air over her skin. Copia's eyes wandered lazily over them, as if he could feel the pattern of the fabric when it gave way to the warmth beneath. He smiled, mustache giving a little twitch as he stood up from the patio chair he had been sitting on, the table between he and his girl glassy under barely starlight. It was late. They really should be getting to bed.
Milagro looked up as he approached, his frame covering her with a hand on each of the arms of her own chair. Her eyes fluttered to droop, feeling the heat of The Cardinal's body in front of her. Despite the flashy surfer shorts and tank top, cheesy as the fit was, the simple nearness of him was like a spell being cast over her, and instinctively, her head tilted towards his as he bestowed to her lips, a kiss. His fangs were tucked away, everything about the man that had ever seemed intimidating, terrifying, and thrilling, had softened as she felt him lean closer, deepening the moment. The open mouthed kisses warm, and hypnotizing. The soft hum of pleased sounds flowing between them.
"I dont want to, to go to bed yet" Milagro gasped, a bit breathless when they finally did come up from the swirling deep for air.
The Cardinal cracked a smile and gently rubbed his nose against hers, a gesture endearing and gentle.
"You stay up so often amore, who's the child of the night now, you or me?"
Milagro tisked and slid her hands up along the pale arms that were both protecting and caging her in. She unwrapped her cross legs and slid her feet down, running a chill across Copias skin. She was always something soft, and yet, powerful in presence. She could whisk him away so easily, he often forgot that he had intended to carry *her away to bed.
"I won't be long this time I promise," Milagro said, using her body to give Copia a squeeze, like a hug from her entire heart, "just another round and I'l be in."
Copia sighed. It felt good to feel her hold him. Full bodied and *feeling*. A sensation that seemed to chase away the emptiness that could so quickly darken his sight. But here she was. Blond hair shining under the blue dark, and in that sweet sweater, bare skinned, an angel, gentle and kind, and she loved him. No matter the complications of how they got there, in this moment, they were together the way they had been before. But closer now. For he had made something in her, as much as she seemed to make something spark in him. They had been searchlights in the night and their beams had aligned to point to something hopeful beyond the-
"I thought ide find ya'll out here!" Chimed in a familiar voice.
Jim, bare chested and barefoot, hair beach waved and boyish smile flashin like something sunny before the set, he plodded over and bowed a little, swooping his hand to take the bong from the glass table, the click of his flame to the bowl igniting a shine that always seemed to blink behind those long lashed, cow-brown, eyes of his. It was night so of course his shades weren't on, but that didnt deter from his sort of, too cool for school, attitude as he spoke.
"Relax, I'm here for the session, not you" Jim giggled. He had probably been smoking at the front porch but had either decided to be a nuisance on purpose, or had run out of his own stash and had come to mooch off of Millie’s.
When Jim had appeared Copia had backed away form Milagro slightly, as if he had felt, caught, or maybe had been too public in his displaying affections.
"Oh, you barely interrupted anything, I'm gonna head in soon anyways." Milagro chuckled, patting a reassuring hand on Copias hip. He stepped back and leaned into the touch a moment, letting his hand drift to her chin where he hooked an ungloved finger beneath it.
"See you in bed soon, amore..." Copia smiled, feeling somehow he must make a gracious exit from a moment he was not a part of, one that Jim wanted alone with Millie.
As Jim was sucking down his smoke, Copia playfully snatched the bong away and pulled out his own lighter, huffing a long toke, sending loud bubbling sounds up into the air.
"Hey!" Jim tried to protest, coughing and waving his hand trying to clear the smoke Copia was blowing.
Milagro giggled this time, and opened her arms as if requesting a hug, "My turn!" She said cheering. Copia tisked this time, playful and matter of factly, "Not without a refresh my sweet!" And he quickly set about ashing out the burnt bowl and refilling it with a well packed pinch from the decorative grinder nearby. The smell aromatic and pleasantly cloying.
"Aww thanks love." Milagro smiled.
Satanas, she really could steal his breath away with such smiles, Copia could hardly resist it even now, she could be so utterly bewitching...
Languid and nearly naked, sitting so pretty, the sweater barely covering up past her hips and the looseness of it dangling like a daphenous shawl, exposing her shoulders and the top of her chest, bunching cutely oversized along her arms and hands...
He passed the bong to her, "For you darling, first hit fresh and pretty-"
"Lak you!" Jim Chimed in, snapping the tab of a beer Copia had not noticed him bring out.
He eyed Jim sideways a bit, "Just take it easy with that yeah, I don't want to hold your hair over the toilet again like last night."
"Ohhkay Daaaad" Jim said, a long breath and eye-roll to boot.
"I'll keep an eye on him, if he hurls I'll make sure he falls over the balcony along with it." Milagro winked.
Copia smirked and, with a final caress to her face, and a chinny nod to Jim, took his leave, wishing he could stay longer. But he didn't want to intrude. He knew not every moment of the night was his.... buuuuut if he was, "accidentally" nosey, and the bedroom window happened to be open nearby, if things got to interesting he would hear either the moans or screams and break it up.
Milagro was his girl, he felt. And though he'd never say so to her face, there was a possessive gleam that shined out from behind the dark circles of paint round his eyes, and from the corner of the darkened bedroom, something a little less than a glare of jealousy flashed, as he heard Jim and Milagro's voices carry, soft and light in the breeze. He sighed. She seemed happy, friendly, chatty, per usual when she was high. Jim, goofy and a bit flamboyant in his tone, was laughing at something she said. Their tones hushed periodically but the banter would also seem to come and go...
Honestly, despite the mix of feelings burning in his chest, the song for sleep in The Cardinal's ears was stronger... and the dreamy waves crashing beyond were like the assuring whispers that, really, he wasn't so angry, jealous or sad... he was, glad.
Inside and out.
There were many moments not weeks ago he thought he would never hear the beloved voices of his loved ones again. Hearing them now, eased his spirit, where love and laughter had been so incomplete and absent from before...
"Let them be-" he thought, curling deeper into the fleece blanket, a hand cupping a soft corner to his nose, like a comfort to himself, "they're here. And they're being happy. And they'll both be in bed soon. Thats all I want," he murmured to himself, "That's all that matters..."
And the Cardinal's words floated above his sleepy head, as his own consciousness floated just above sleep, only just awake, until he felt the warmth of two bodies slide into the covers, joining him on either side of the bed, with himself tucked in the middle.
And then finally, humming softly and smiling as he snuggled down into the embraces of his dear ones, at last, the peace of the world lay over the trio like a blanket to wish them well, and the music of the night echoed through the window like a lullaby, and soon, all were peacefully sound asleep...
