#44 - First Film Review - Grosse Point Blank
So, I thought I'd ease myself in with this one, an oldie but a goody, just one I hadn't seen:
Directed by George Armitage and starting more Cusack's than you can shake a stick it, this was a terribly enjoyable film. Even if it is fast approaching 20 years old it has stood the test of time well. Maybe the location choices are key, but at no point did it feel dated.
The story follows Martin Blank, clearly a high school misfit turned contract killer, who through his work comes to be back in his home town for his high school reunion. A mixture of dissatisfaction with his work and himself have caused him to confide in a counselor, with whom his discusses all his jobs. Much to say, said counselor is not impressed that he trusts him with this information.
A tip off by a competitor leaves Martin with 2 FBI agents on his tail (One of whom is played by Hank Azaria of Simpsons fame), which seem to get in the way with Martin making amends with his high school sweet heart, Debi.
Finding the details of the contract kill is in fact Debi's father he heads to the job, completing it himself in a somewhat fumbled manner. A number of further kills ensue leaving Debi shell shocked, and the film wraps up with a marriage proposal and them leaving town together.
For such a black film with a dark subject it was thoroughly enjoyable and a recommended viewing! Cut me some slack with this being my first one, I'm sure they'll get better!
