Grim Fandango is definitely a game that deserved to be remastered. From the great character designs and personalities to terrific music, mind boggling puzzles and unique levels. Those are what first comes to mind when I think of Grim Fandango. Somehow it captures your attention even though, at times, it can brutally make you work for solutions to its quirky tasks. And when you coupled that with a solid sense of humor, this made most of the difficult puzzles not just tolerable but worth the effort...even though there were several instances where we were ready to pull our hair out!

The game does have some faults, mostly with showing its age. Double Fine opted to keep the port as faithful as possible by leaving the puzzles alone and just enhancing the look. This will keep the long time fans happy but people new to the game can easy spot how the industry has evolved in the last 20+ years. It would be like playing 007 Golden Eye on the N64 after only ever playing the most recent Call of Duty games...it was groundbreaking back in the day but a lot has changed.

Overall this was a terrific game to run through and we are happy to have it under our belts. Be prepared for frustration as you course through the game and don’t be shy to seek some assistance online.

Grim Fandango is a single player point and click adventure in 3D originally released on Windows in 1998 and recently remastered in 2015 for Windows, Mac, PS4, Vita, Android and iOS. For this play through any of these versions will work because the remastering essentially only upgraded graphics.

Grim Fandango takes place in the Land of the Dead where recently deceased souls must stop before going to the Ninth Underworld or basically heaven. The story follows Manny Calavera who is a Grim Reaper/Travel Agent for a company called The Department of Death or D.O.D. for short. Manny, alongside others like him, are dispatched to the recently deceased to collect their souls and bring them to the Land of the Dead. Once collected they must travel to their final resting place of the Ninth Underworld but to do so they have a few options depending on what type of person you were in life.

Like any good story there is corruption, murder and the innocent caught in between.
