the car smelled like iced coffee, sun-warmed fabric, and him.
daniel caesar was playing on the speakers while juhoon was driving with one hand on the wheel, the other one wrapped around yours. your fingers were laced together fully, his grip warm, his thumb moving in slow, absent circles against your skin, tracing the same path over and over again.
his sleeve was pushed up just enough to show his wrist, veins faint under the skin, sunlight slipping through the window and painting gold across him like he belonged in it.
you were supposed to be navigating.
“are you even looking at the directions?” he asked, voice low, kind of amused.
“i was,” you said, “but then you started looking all… pretty.”
he let out a quiet laugh, slowly turning to look at you. “pretty?”
“yeah!” you replied, leaning your head against the window. “you’re really pretty, kim juhoon.”
he shook his head, smiling to himself, but his ears went a little pink. “i could say the same thing about you, yn.”
his grip on your hand shifted, and he brought it up, slow enough that you could’ve pulled away if you wanted to.
his lips brushed against the back of your hand, placing a kiss on the knuckles of your hand.
“you are gorgeous,” he said quietly, against your skin.
he set your hand back down between you, fingers tightly lacing with yours again.
you stared at him.
“you’re insane,” you whispered, cheeks turning pink.
“i’m insane for you,” he said, smirking. he knew what he did to you.
the road stretched out endlessly ahead of you, tires rolling over asphalt in a rhythm that matched the quiet beat of everything between you.
at some point, your head tilted, resting lightly against his shoulder when the car stopped at a red light. he was so relaxed into it.
his shoulder shifted just slightly, adjusting so you’d be more comfortable, his hands tightening around yours, grounding, reassuring.
“you’re sleepy?” he asked.
“a little.”
“you can sleep.”
“i don’t wanna miss this.”
he glanced down at you, softly kissing the top of your head.
“you won’t. i’ll wake you up if anything important happens.”
“what counts as important?”
“anything that makes you smile,” he answered.
you tilted your head up, squinting at him a little.
“what?” he asked, glancing down at you.
you leaned in and pressed a quick kiss to his lips.
“that makes me smile,” you said.
he huffed out a quiet laugh, shaking his head a little, his hand tightening around yours.
“next time warn me.”
“no,” you said, smiling to yourself. “i like catching you off guard.”
“yeah?”
“yeah.”
he glanced at you again. “….do it again then.”
you looked up at him, pretending to think about it. “maybe later.”
his smile lingered. he didn’t mind waiting.
