LINDSAY: You are born in Alpha Station to two doting parents.They love you and they push you as you grow up, encouraging you to study thesciences and mingle with the Chancellor’s son, who’s just a bit younger than you.They want a good life for you, one with a high level job and Alpha Stationconnections. They want a life for you like the life they’ve lived. They never considerwhat you want. That you like Earth Skills and plant biology better than your computerscience classes. That you’d rather spend your days in the farm station greenhousethan learning to program or going to social mixers with the other Alpha Stationkids. You start sneaking off to Farm Station more and more under the guise ofspending time with your “friends,” who are really just Alpha Station kids younamedrop to your parents. Your real friends laugh with you in the greenhouseand tend to the plants with you, like Monty (who prefers functional plantswhere you prefer prettier things, like flowers and twisting vines) or Bryan(who isn’t going to be a farmer like his parents, but feels calmed by spendingtime around the plants). When you’re old enough, just barely eighteen, you moveto Farm Station, a small one bedroom living space and you land a job in thegreenhouse. Your parents don’t talk to you for months. Not until the Ark isdying, and there is a choice to be made: you can sit with Farm Station on thedescent, or go back to where you grew up in Alpha. Your parents want you to comewith them, a journey to the ground is monumental, and if these are the lastmoments of the sky people, they think you should be with family. But FarmStation has become family too over the last few years in a different way. Beforetaking your place next to Bryan, you tell your parents, “May we meet again.”And you do, when Farm Station finally reunites with Alpha on the ground. You’vetraveled for months with Pike in charge, seen vicious grounder attacks againand again. It’s hard for you to see how the other sky people could havepossibly made peace with them. Whetheryou end up siding with Pike or Kane hardly matters in the long run because inthe end, you’re just chipped, and you side with ALIE until Clarke frees you fromthe City of Light’s prison. When the Death Wave looms, you don’t make Clarke’slist. There are other more experienced farmers out there, and you don’t havethe personal relationship with her to carry your spot on the list, like BellamyBlake, who scored the 99th spot. Maybe your parents were right, andyou should’ve been mingling with the Alpha Station kids all along. Maybe youshould have fostered those connections. But looking at the plants around, theflowers in all different colors, the green grass, the things that are just the essenceof Earth, you wouldn’t change a thing.
