Devastated that we’ve lost The Great #GregEscalante sandwiched here between me and our most talented friend @chaz_bojorquez who originally introduced me to him decades ago. We were under Greg’s wing and his support and belief in all of us helped spawn a whole new movement in art here in Los Angeles dubbed #LowBrow that fast made ripples all around the world. He existed in my art life as far back as I can remember. As a kid in the late 80s my mother would take me down to the 0-1 Gallery on Melrose to see all the strange and crazy art shows John Polkna and Greg were putting on with the likes of one of my all time art heroes, Robert Williams. Years later through his guidance I wound up doing my first shows there. Greg supported my early days passionately and helped get my works into some great collections, as well collecting a few himself when he could. Him and Robert would on to give birth to the most influential underground art & culture mag of all times @juxtapoz magazine. His was the first opinion that mattered. I rang him a few weeks ago to be the first to come check out my new works. A call left unanswered. Fuck. If I only knew. He was huge to our culture, he was the culture itself. He blessed us artists with his palette of passion and it was wonderful to watch Greg evolve into the ringleader of this wild and diverse circus of colors and styles, living in a painting created by his own stroke of magic, magic, everywhere. I’m gonna miss your unique attitude and the magnetic circles, both young and old, you formed. Thank you for being outrageous and wonderfully inspiring. LA will miss you, no one can fill your shoes.
Rest in Peace Greg Escalante. You were one of the most important person in art history and art world. You brought so many amazing artist and art in to the world. I miss you very much. Thank you very much for your support and encouragement, enthusiasm and love. I wouldn’t make this far without you. Thank you for sharing part of your time. #art #gregescalante #coprogallery #juxtapoz #juxtapozmag @greg.escalante @gregorio_escalante_gallery @coprogallery @juxtapozmag (at Los Angeles, California)

Extremely happy that this image of #GregEscalante in the @OrangeCountyRegister was chosen as a finalist for this year's @LAPressClub national journalism award for Portrait Photography. As many of you know, Greg took his own life last year. He was a brilliant light for so many in the LA arts community, particularly those of us living and working near his former gallery on Chung King Road. The neighborhood is simply not the same without him. 😞 That said, I am glad to have captured this image, as I feel it truly captures his keen, thoughtful, playful personality. We miss you, Sir! Wish you were here. (at Chung King Road) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqOBe3dAVYE/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=5e7gs0hzh5s4
