I honestly don’t know very much about Superman villains except for the big ones--Lex Luthor, Darkseid, Bizarro, Metallo, Braniac--and those that have appeared in Superman: The Animated Series and Supes’ animated movies. 

Darkseid has some of the most memorable scenes out the entire animated series, like when he murdered Dan Turpin out of nowhere. One of the scenes that stuck with me over the years since I first watched S:TAS as a kid is when Superman defeats Darkseid and tells the people who have been enslaved by him that they are now free to do as they wish, only for them to carry a wounded Darkseid from the battle field out of genuine reverence and concern. Darkseid then tells a very shocked Superman that he is “many things, Kal-el, but here I am God”. 

Lex Luthor is a complex character, and one I haven’t been able to entirely figure out. He’s obviously a sneaky, dishonest, malicious, selfish villain, but he also has moments that make you almost feel bad for him, like when he catches sight of his ashamed reflection while devouring chocolate bars like a barbarian after being captured and starved by Braniac, and when he attends Superman’s funeral in the Justice League episode “Hereafter” and comforts a grieving Lois by telling her that he’s going to miss Superman too. 

Bizarro is a sad character, and since he appears to be well-meaning but extremely confused I’m not sure if he’s actually a villain since none of his acts are committed out of cruelty or malice (at least in S:TAS). 

I would feel horrible for Metallo if he wasn’t such a dick. Receiving what basically amounts to a drawn-out, painful death sentence just so Lex Luthor could test out his new gadgets is ten kinds of awful, but Metallo is so power hungry and willing to hurt others--even the naive children who aided his recovery after discovering him post-Superman battle and thinking he’s a giant action figure--just to get to Superman that any sympathy for him quickly evaporates. 

Braniac is a big, creepy robot and that’s...pretty much the beginning and end of how I feel about him.
