Great John his mark
Nipmuc. His homelands in and around Natick in so-called “Massachusetts.” Great John adds his mark to this document alongside several other Nipmucs, including Waban, Andrew Pitteme, Piambo and Awasamaug, who identify themselves as “Indian Natives and natural Descendants of the ancient Inhabitants and proprietors of the Lands lying in and about the Town of Sherborn…” The document goes on to outline the exchange of more than 2000 acres of land “more or less” at so-called Sherborn, Massachusetts (south of Framingham) for “five and twenty pounds of currant money…”
Great John’s mark can be found on other documents from the period that contest the sale of other lands across Nipnet, or Nipmuc Country, nearby to his home at Natick.
