You can tell from a glance at the bodies and faces that this is the work of a comic book artist. ISFDB catalogues this as Estaban Maroto's only SF and fantasy book cover. If you read Warren Publishing comics like Creepy, Eerie and especially Vampirella you'll be very familiar with the works of this fine and prolific Spanish artist. Maroto is perhaps best known for illustrating the first Red Sonja stories for Marvel Comics, and for designing the heroine's iconic chainmail bikini.
Do we know how Mr.Gray even got his moniker?
His name is Dean Allen so what I’m saying is imagine Colin, who prefers keeping the bloody stuff a good distance away from him, insisting on dropping the real names. It’s wiser. It makes it harder to trace. It’s mildly more fun.
Dean doesn’t care but ever since his employment, Colin hasn’t shut up about his boring, gloomy presence anyways.
“Oh look, another gray suit.” “Piper have you see my hitman lately?” “Which one?” “The gray one” “I wanted to get you the rental in your favourite color but we both know you don’t have one so I opted for the most boring one instead. Congrats Gray Man.”
The quips began even before his employment. His office was notably stark and void of the usual warm brown leather tones of traditional academia. Black briefcases, silver pens, graytoned postcards and conference posters. So, eventually, one night when he had to use a fake name to set up a business meeting, Dean just resigns himself to the title and he becomes Mr.Gray from then on.
