You were almost done with your usual closing shift, taking a glance and the ever so slowly moving hands on the clock across the cafe every once in a while. You didnât have any plans, per say, but were anxious to get home and finally rest.Â
The cafe wasnât particularly busy this late, but still had its usual stragglers coming in to burn the midnight oil.
âHey there Mr.Delancey, the usual this evening?â You grinned at the older man in front of you. Mr.Delancey was the owner of a bar downtown that closed just an hour before your cafe. It was typical of him to stop by after closing up.
âYou got it,â The man took out his wallet, paid, and took his drink to go, almost like second nature. You let your shoulders slack after he walked out, looking once again to the clock and then finding your eyes caught on a familiar mop of brown hair in the corner of the seating area.
You turned to your coworker who was doing some sort of âpass the timeâ task.
âManila folder guyâs back again?â He mustâve come in during your break- you wouldâve remembered his soft brown eyes and even more so the bags underneath them. You didnât know much about him, not having been able to make small talk with him whenever he came in.
âYeah, I think this is the third night this week,â Your coworker looked over to the man briefly before returning to their task. âI mean, you canât really beat the late great closing time of midnight around hereâ you joked to yourself, entering a tip amount into the computer system. You coworker chuckled then looked out of the front windows.
âHey you mind if I grab a smoke? Thereâs hardly anyone coming in.â You shoo your coworker off then look back to the man in the corner. It took you another 10 minutes to muster up enough courage to approach him.
You walked up to the table, a refill of the manâs familiar order in hand.
âSo what are you working on this late?â Your own voice startles you to some amount, breaking the silence that occupied the shop for what felt like eternity. The man didnât bother to look up, instead continuing to flip aimlessly through the folders. You caught a look at the pictures in them, cringing before tilting your head to the side.
âTheyâre all wearing rings.â You muttered. The man looked up, then back down to the folders, his eyebrows raising. âSorry, I donât know what this is, and I donât think I really want to know but-yeah. On their pinkies, the small gold ring.â
âNice, uh, nice catch. I donât know how I didnât see that.â He spoke finally, writing something down then looking back up to you. âIâm Spencer. Reid. Iâm a profiler for the FBI.â Your eyebrows raised then. âFBI huh? So looking at cryptic photos in a manila folder isnât just a hobby?â You kind of laugh to yourself, crossing your arms and shifting your weight. Spencer doesnât seem to think your comment was as funny as you did, but still offered a soft smile.
âIâm afraid not.â The silence is back and fuck you are realizing that this guy- this rando FBI profiler is really cute. Before your brain can catch up your mouth is already running again.
âHave you always wanted to be in the FBI?â From there you manage to carry a small conversation, taking the seat in front of him and listening as he talks about his high IQ or eidetic memory.
11:34pm
Your coworker whistles at you from behind the coffee bar, pointing to the clock and beginning to shut down the espresso machines.
âWell Dr.Reid, it was great meeting you. I hope you catch whoever is doing- that,â you motion to the now closed folder.
You get up to move back to the coffee bar, taking off your apron and placing it by the register. Spencer continues to look over his notes. Against your better judgment you turn back around to face the brunette man.Â
âI know this is probably really forward of me- but would you want to grab dinner sometime?â You began to ramble about some diner down the street and Spencer takes another sip of his coffee. âI mean- it could totally just be a casual thing but I would really like to get to know you moreâŠâ You trailed off- your motor mouth finally running out of fuel.
Spencerâs eyes softened, and he looked down at the workload in front of him. It was almost like he was debating with himself.
âI- I would love to but Iâm really usually caught up with work so I donât have a lot of time for,,, dinnerâŠâ You nod. âRight yeah- yeah of course. Have a good night, Spencer.â With that you walked behind the coffee bar and sunk down to the floor behind the espresso machines.
âOuch,â You run a hand over your face, embarrassment flowing through your veins. You decide to brush it off and begin busying yourself with sidework.
12:03
The cafe was finally closed. Spencer had left in the last 10 minutes and you managed to spot clean every single spoon in the store.
âDude I just- I know I like donât even know him but that was so embarrassingâ You whine, counting the dollar bills in the register and taking note of them.
âWhat do you mean?â Your coworker was checking the temperatures in the different mini fridges.
âLike- of course he wouldnât want to go out with a total stranger. I don't even know why I asked.â Your hands flopped back down on the counter in front of you. You were tired, you were embarrassed, and you just wanted to go home for the night.Â
âIâm sorry who are we talking abou-â
âSpencer! I thought I told you.â You turned around and leaned against the counter. âManila folder guy- he- heâs cute. In a dorky kinda nerdy way.â You grinned at the thought.
âOh! No he was totally looking at you all night when you got back here.â
âNo he wasnât.â
âHe was! I saw him with my own two eyes.â Your coworker laughed and gestured to their eyes. âI think maybe heâs just genuinely busy with work⊠You said he was a cop or something right?â
âHeâs FBI- I donât even know if I shouldâve told you. I feel like thatâs something thatâs supposed to be a secret. Or is that CIA? I can never remember.â You shook your head, your thoughts trailing from the initial subject of the conversation.
âWhatever- the point is, he was totally making eyes at you after you walked away.â You rolled your eyes at this, turning back to finish counting the money.
The rest of the night is quiet after that.
1 week later, 3:45pm
It was a rare occasion for you to not work the closing shift. You werenât complaining since it meant getting home earlier and maybe even getting dinner from somewhere other than a 24 hour convenience store.
You were working with the same coworker you normally do, and you were thankful since you werenât really close with any of your other coworkers.
The afternoon regulars were different from the evening regulars. They were still kind, but definitely far more impatient.
âIâve got 1 medium hot cappuccino and a large iced cold brew with oat milk to go.â You write the order on the side of the cups and move them to your coworker down the coffee bar. You take the customerâs payment and give them a smile before readying yourself for the next customer.
âUhm, the usual?â You knew this voice. You didnât think youâd hear this voice again.
âSpencer. Itâs nice to see you again. You catch that bad guy?â
Spencer laughed at this. He thought you were easy to talk to that night, and he still thinks so now. He could tell you were a little out of your element when you initially approached him but you were generally easy to build rapport with.
âYeah- we did. But thereâs always another one out there.â You nod, then realize you hadnât entered his order in the computer yet.
âOh my gosh Iâm so sorry-â You tapped one of the buttons and grabbed a sit-in mug. You nodded to your coworker. âA manila folder.â Your coworker nodded back and when you returned your attention to Spencer you found him with his eyebrows furrowed.
âItâs what we call your order. Since you always have those folders.â You shrug and Spencer nods. âAnyway, itâll be $3.75.â You put your customer service smile back on and take the $5 from the man.
âKeep the change and actually, I wanted to come by and see if that dinner offer was still on the table? Work is light this week and- uh- Iâd like to get to know you more too.â
Youâre taken aback, but your coworker who suddenly has supersonic hearing peeks over your shoulder.Â
âThey get off at 5.â Your head whips around to look at your coworker who simply mouths a âyouâre welcomeâ before continuing to make Spencerâs drink.
âSo Iâll stick around until 5 and then maybe we can check out that diner?â You nod.
âYeah- yeah Iâd really,â Your voice catches in your throat and you swallow before continuing, âIâd really like that.â
extra:
It was a Monday morning, the day after Spencer supposedly rejected you. While you were retracing the conversation in your mind to think of things youâd do differently, Dr.Reid fiddled with his notepad, looking over the tip you gave him about the rings.
Hotch had dismissed the team to continue on their individual tasks, but Spencer hung back almost lost in his own mind.
âOkay pretty boy whatâs got you distracted today.â Derek Morgan sat with his chair turned and raised a brow at the genius.
âNothing at all. Just thinking about- about the case.â Spencer tried to cover but as smart as he was, he wasnât very good at hiding his current thoughts.
âBullshit- whatâs on your mind.â
âWell I think- I think someone asked me out last night.â Derekâs once cheeky look turned to that of surprise.
âYouâre kidding.â Spencer shook his head, âYouâre not, well what did you say?â
âWell I told them the truth- weâre pretty busy right now.â Derek laughed. âNo way- you rejected them? I didnât take you for a heartbreaker, Reid.â
âIâm not! I just- we are pretty busy..â Spencer trailed and Morgan shook his head. âYou need to go back and ask them out, clearly if youâve been letting this get in the way of finding this damn killer, theyâre worth it.â
âYeah- okay maybe I will.â
âBut not before we solve the case, so letâs move it pretty boy.â
hiii can I request a james fic? like james staring at reader? Like the scene in little women, when Amy sees Laurie staring at her.

The leaves were starting to turn from a deep green to a bright orange. This time of year the libraries were always crowded with people trying to keep whatever minimal study schedule they had left before the winter holidays came around to ruin it. With the autumn breeze just arriving and the heat from the late summer sun still sticking around, in your opinion it was the perfect weather for a study picnic by the black lake.
You sat on a knit blanket you got from one of your grandparents years ago, a few books weighing down loose pieces of parchment scattered around you. Right now your focus was on your current charms assignment. However, your boyfriendâs focus was on you.
James liked watching you while you worked, how focused you looked. Sometimes youâll bite the inside of your lip, or twirl your quill in your hand. He just liked being there and admiring you.
You huffed when you realized you hadnât been paying attention to the page youâve been reading and went to go start it over, but as you looked up you did a double take when you realized James was already staring.
âWhat are you doing?â A grin crossed your features. James blinks slowly.
âLookingâ he was sick with love. He knew it, his mates knew it, hell even you could tell every once in a while.
âAt what.â
âYou.â you rolled your eyes. You knew James was a romantic, that he would go out of his way to get you your favorite treats or flowers or even beverages if he had even an inkling of a feeling you wanted it. You werenât used to it yet. Despite having been dating for a couple months now, his love was still new in a way- fresh, even.
âWhy?â You try to look back down at your book, thinking the conversation would end with that. An ambiguous question.
âWhy not?â Damn his mesmerizing eyes. Damn his fluffy, curly dark hair. Damn his dorky, perfect, lopsided smile.
âWell I think itâs kind of strange that youâre just sitting there staring at me..â You trail off. Youâre teasing him and he knows it. You like the banter, so does he.
âI can leave,â he starts to stand, you shut your book, âif thatâs what you-â
âNo,â You grab onto the end of his sleeve and pull slightly. He is immediately sitting back on the blanket âyou can stay.â Your voice is less teasing now, more quiet, almost unsure even though youâre sure James wouldnât have really left.
As James readjusts in his spot on the blanket, he kisses you. Itâs a short, sweet little thing, but enough to get your heart racing. The boy doesnât want to distract you any more than he may have already.
He pulls away and you blindly shove a random book into his hands, hoping to give him something to do besides torture you. The back of your neck is hot with a new shyness you donât often feel around him. Except when he does things like this of course; distracting you, flattering you.
You look back to your book, taking a breath and beginning the page again. James opens the book you gave him, definitely upside down. But heâs not reading it anyway.
Hiya! How are you? Could I request a fluffy fic with James Potter please? Maybe the reader ismt used to being loved, comes from a broken home, and everything James does flusters her while melting her heart. Like them sitting in the common room with friends but all James can think is to make sure the reader feels good and even braids her hair whilst getting teased by Sirius
damn y'all know how to tug on my heartstrings, I hope you enjoy ! thank you for the request <33

It had been a long day of classes. Why you had so many in one day was a mystery to you but it didnât matter anymore cause you were finally done. The halls and stairs seemed to be never ending as you made your way back to the Gryffindor common room. You wanted nothing more than to change into sweatpants and curl up in bed, maybe with James.Â
When you finally made it back to the common room you found said boy and his friends sitting around the fire. Some of them studying, others very blatantly playing cards or talking to one another. You grinned at the sight. Hogwarts had become more a family to you than you expected, and it was a well needed family compared to what you were coming from.
James was really the only one that knew the extent of your issues back home, but never brought it up unless you wanted to. Everyone else just assumed you werenât one to talk about your past.
You set your bag down at one of the tables and made your way to the group. Your bed could wait a little longer. It was almost like James could sense your presence without so much as looking up because before you knew it he had met you halfway and was pulling you into his arms.
You wrapped your own arms around his waist and let out a relieved breath. Jamesâs hugs were nice, full of love, sincere, he-
âEverything alright lovely?â You look up at your boyfriend and smile softly.
âYeah, they are now.â your arms move from his waist to hold his hands. James presses a kiss to your forehead.
âAlright we get it youâre in a loving relationship, Prongs are you in for the next round?â You could hear the playful eye roll in Siriusâs voice. He liked to tease the two of you, mostly because James was the only one you were affectionate with in public, but partly because he had no idea the way Remus looked at him when he wasnât paying attention.
You and James walked back over to the couch, James settling on it, and you opting for the ground in front of him. It was almost immediately when James started to brush his fingers through your hair.
Physical affection you had learned was his love language. It was admittedly hard to get used to at first, but you knew every caress, every hug, every kiss, was always full of love.
You watched Lily and Sirius play cards, Peter sitting by and trying to play but ending up on the losing end of the game. Remus was scribbling something down on parchment, looking up every once in a while to see how the game was going.
James began to braid your hair back. Nothing major, just a simple braid, but it was exactly what you needed for the end of your day. Lily had taught him how to braid one day in potions when they were partners and her hands were coated in blue sludge. It turned out to be more in your favor that he knew how. Though it didnât always turn out to be the prettiest braid, you appreciate his effort.
James tapped your shoulder and you handed him one of the hair ties on your wrist. You laughed as Lily took the round and moved to sit on the couch with James.
âWanna talk about your day?â James shifted so you were laying with your head on his lap. You shook your head in reply, much more content and comfortable than you had been 20 minutes ago. James smiled and nodded then looked back as Sirius began to demand a rematch. Poor Peter had basically given up by now, but it remained all in good fun.
You couldnât imagine a better way to end your day.

third year
âBefore we begin please make sure your partner next to you has properly secured their earmuffsâ
Professor Sprout circled the rows of desks as students turned to one another, chatting for a bit while they waited for the next set of instructions. In the back of the classroom James Potter laughs at something Sirius Black says then looks at his own partner. He hadnât had the need to speak to you all year, but all of the sudden there you were and he couldnât think of a single reason why he hadnât tried.
âHow loud do you reckon they actually are?â
Youâre pulled out of your daze, shifting your eyes to meet the hazel ones of your partner. You knew of James Potter and his friends. You were lucky enough to have never been subject to their merciless pranks, but heard tales of the fourâs reputation and their seemingly reserved seats in detention. And now here James Potter was, asking you about Mandrakes and âhow loud you reckon they areâ
âNot louder than your mum in bed last nightâ Sirius interrupts in the background, James whips his head around and grimaces, âGross mate, really?â Sirius shrugs, cackling to himself, and moves into conversation with Remus beside him. You laugh once and the ice between you and your tablemate is broken at long last. James smiles at the sound of your laugh, mentally making a note that he should hear it more.
âSorry about that-â James starts but is quickly interrupted by Professor Sprout resuming her instruction.
âAnd now once youâre sure your ear muffs are on- grip the mandrake by the stem and pull firmly.â
Students all around lift their mandrakes and re-pot them according to the professorâs specific directions.
It wasnât until after the class ended that James had the opportunity to speak to you again.
âThat was some handiwork with those screechers.â You turn to him as you close your textbook.Â
âWhat can I say, I guess Iâm a naturalâ you muse and Jamesâs smile only grows.
âIâm James by the way. Potterâ he offers a smirk but not in a way where he expects you to be impressed but more in a genuine boyish way.
âI know who you are. I mean- everyone knows who you are. Iâm Y/N. L/N.â
---
âLily I mean it- he blew up the poor bird, it was awful.â You walk next to Lily Evans between classes, a normal occurrence but somehow never dull. The two of you had been friends since first year, finding solace in being the only two of your roommates with any connection to the muggle world.
âEvans! L/N!â Sirius Black shouts down the hall. The pair of you stopped short, silently agreeing to continue your conversation later. Sirius, Remus, James and Peter pick up their pace to meet the two of you.
Months had passed since your first interaction with the marauders and since then you found yourself around them more often than not. You didnât complain though, it was nice to have a secure group of friends at hogwarts, especially if it meant you didnât have to awkwardly squeeze between random students in the great hall.
"To what do we owe the pleasure of your company?" You jest. James eyes you fondly, taking note of your warm smile. You met Jamesâs eye and your own heart began to race. A moment of silence passed before Sirius stepped forward.
âNothing at all, lovely L/N. Dearest Evans, will you accompany Remus, Peter and I on a stroll through the courtyardâ Sirius winks at Lily, a mischievous glint in his demeanor. You looked between the trio and your friend, confusion taking over.
âBut we were just-â
âOf course, Black. Letâs be on our way. Iâll catch up with you later,â Lily patted your shoulder once before leaving you in the hallway. You watched them walk down the hallway, a shortlived sense of betrayal overcoming you.
âUhm- hi.â You looked back to James who watched Sirius and the otherâs walk off just a moment longer. When he looked back to you a soft smile overcame his face.
âHi.â James offered back then continued, âuhm I wanted to ask you somethingâ. Your eyes widened slightly at the stutter in your heartbeat. You and James have spent loads of time together in the past. Why was now any different? Was it related to your sudden longing to run your fingers through his dark curls? Or the giddyness you felt whenever he called you something sweet?
âYeah of course,â You shook your head and brought your thoughts back to the present conversation, âWhatâs up?â
âWell, you know thereâs a Hogsmede trip coming up,â James started, his head dropped to watch the shuffling of his feet, âI was- well I thought maybe youâd like to, uhm, come with me? To the three broomsticks or anywhere else?â James didnât meet your eye again until he finished his statement. He brought his hand up to rub the back of his neck. Your eyes brightened and you took a step toward the boy.
âLike a date?â You asked, hopeful. Jameâs features lit up. âYeah, like a date.â

seventh year
The marauders sat in the Gryffindor common room, celebrating finally being done with their N.E.W.T.s. While Lily cradled a bowl of popcorn in her lap on an armchair, Peter played a card game Remus and Sirius watched his boyfriend with adoration, you and James sat on the couch in complete bliss.
The past few weeks had been stressful on everyone, studying for exams and keeping up with classes meant very little time to galavant around the castle or even converse with friends for more than a few minutes. Exams finally being over was the best thing to happen to your friends. Relief washed over not only you and your friends but the entirety of Hogwarts. Where once the libraries were full and free spaces were sparse- now that same population was found out on the green or near the Black Lake.
âI am so glad weâre finally done. It feels like I can finally breatheâ You let out a sigh, playing with the few rings on Jamesâs fingers. Sirius nodded enthusiastically and Peter looked up for a minute, missing the jack that had just been laid down and thus losing that round of cards.
âI think itâs best for all of us that we are never given a test againâ Peter concludes and sits back on his knees, taking a few chips from one of the bowls of snacks placed around the floor. Lily hums in agreement.
âItâs strange to think that weâre almost done with our studies altogetherâ Remus comments, âHogwarts feels like my entire lifeâ. It was Jamesâs turn to nod now. âNow is when the rest of our lives begin.â Dorcas and Marlene walked into the common room then, swinging the fat lady portrait open, Mary not too far behind them. The three girls joined the group in front of the dormant fireplace. Mary ruffled Siriusâs hair then stole a handful of popcorn from Lily.Â
âSo, how are we celebrating?â Dorcas grins, leaning against the back of the couch where you and James are sat.
âThis isnât celebrating?â Peter asked, his eyebrows raising slightly.
âHeavens no!â Sirius jumps up, âWe have to take on the town, we are done with the last ever standardized tests we will have to take! We donât have to worry about remembering the ingredients to whatever bloody potion Slughorn demands ever again!â James laughs at this, having had to study particularly hard for the potions exam.
You look up at your boyfriend, quickly pecking him on his jaw then looking at the rest of your friends.
âIâm out, I still have muggle studies tomorrowâ Remus sighs, beginning to put the card game away.
âBoooâ you exclaim.
âSpeaking of, Y/N, arenât you supposed to leave after we graduate? For America or something?â Peter inquires. Eyes are suddenly on you. Your neck grows hot at remembering your fatherâs request to join him in America to get in touch with your muggle half.
âUh, yeahâŠâ You trail, finding your thumbs twiddling more interesting than anything else in that moment. James slings an arm over your shoulder and rubs it comfortingly, pressing a kiss to your temple.
âWhatâs your guysâ plan for that? Surely long distance?â Sirius swatâs Remusâs thigh at his statement.Â
James looks down at you, a certain fondness having never left his eye since that first day in Herbology. The two of you had held off on talking about life after Hogwarts. You had tried to bring it up to James, but the boy deflected the topic each time- âweâll cross that bridge when we come to itâ- but now the bridge was a mere few feet away and no plan had been made.
You were nervous, scared even and if James was too- he didnât show it.
âWeâll work it out.â He was terrified.
---
months later
You stopped in the middle of the airport. Your friends rallied behind you, not quite ready to say goodbye but ready to see you move into the next point of your life.
You turned to face your friends, a suitcase on either side of you. Lily took a step forward and was the first to bring you into a tight embrace.
âYou have my number- please call. I donât care how much it costs, I can't not talk to you ever again.â She muttered so only the two of you could hear. You wrapped your arms around the redhead and tears pricked at your eyes. Before now you and Lily hadnât been apart for more than a few months over 7 years. You didnât know what you were going to do without her.
After a moment Lily stepped back, she wiped a few tears from her vibrant eyes. Remus and Sirius were the next to step up.
âGood luck out there Y/N, itâs been a pleasure.â Sirius put a hand on your shoulder and you laughed at his serious expression. âIâm not going off to war, Black, Iâll be back to visit soon enough.â you pulled the boy into a hug. When the two of you broke apart you turned to Remus. You and him hadnât been very close, but he was still a very dear friend in your heart.
âYouâre going to do great things, Y/N.â He offered a small and sad kind of smile. You nodded âYou will too Lupin. Youâre one of the smartest people I know.â You and Remus hugged each other, he patted your back a few times then went to join the group.
Your remaining friends- Peter, Dorcas, Marlene, Mary, even Regulus (though you were sure he was there because his brother was his ride)- said their goodbyes, and with each hug from your loved ones, it became clearer to you how hard this was going to be. You couldnât believe you were leaving. It didnât feel real and you didnât want it to be.
James stood at the back of the group, taking a few steps forward. His eyes still puffy from your joint crying session the night before.
âI- I donât know where to begin-â he started, in front of you now. You took his hands in yours, trying to keep yourself from sobbing in the middle of the airport.Â
âWeâll be okay, James. I promise. I will call and write and Iâm looking for times I can come visit.â You sounded like you were trying to convince yourself. Hogwarts had been your entire life, you didnât think youâd ever truly be prepared to leave. You lifted a hand to brush the side of his handsome face, pulling lightly on a stray curl.
âI know.â James responded and moved his hands to wrap around you. One last hug. You squeezed the boy for what seemed like forever. James pulled back for a moment and dipped his head down to yours, capturing your lips with his. One last kiss. This kiss was made of eagerness and uncertainty. You wanted to believe you would see him soon, that you would see all of your friends soon but the only thing you were sure of was that you couldnât be sure of anything.
When the two of you broke apart you looked up at a clock on a wall and dropped your head. Your flight was leaving in an hour and a half and you still had to make it through security. Sorrow swallowed your heart, and you couldnât bear to look up at your boyfriend- it would only make it harder.
âI have to go.â your words were soft, barely above a whisper and even if James didnât hear you, he couldâve caught the message.
âWhat if I came with you-â Your head sprung back up, meeting Jamesâs eyes once more. Your brows furrowed, âWhat-?â
âI can still buy a ticket, probably. Iâll come with you, Iâve always wanted to go to America.â James grabbed your hands once more and tears pricked your eyes.
âJamesâŠâ you trailed and the boy nodded in understanding. His head dropped and he nodded. James knew he couldnât go with you. Not now as he is starting his quidditch career. When he looked back up his eyes were glassy, leftover tears threatening to fall. He couldnât cry though, he knew it wouldnât do anything in the grand scheme.
âI love you,â He whispered, rubbing his thumb over your knuckles. You sniffed, smiling sadly.
âI love you too. Iâll call you as soon as I can find a phone.â You pulled your hands from his and took your suitcases. James took a single step back and watched you take a deep breath and begin to walk towards the security line.
It took everything in you to not look back, because if you did, you knew youâd never make it to America.
---
approximately two months later
You knew it would be hard accommodating to your new life, but you didnât think you would be so immediately homesick. The culture shock wasnât even the worst part. You could get used to the different accents and driving on the other side of the road but what you couldnât get used to was your roommate.
Lydia seemed nice, she really did, and you tried your best to get along with her when you initially moved into the university dorms. She just- wasnât around much. Constantly partying and going out with her American friends meant you were alone most of the time in an unfamiliar city.
You tried your best to keep in contact with your father but his job left him unavailable as well for most of the day.
But by now you had established a routine- go to class, stop by a little cafe on the way home, study, call whoever was awake back home, go to sleep, repeat. Tonight you called Lily.
âSo your roommate is out again?â Lily sat on her own couch, the chord of her phone stretched almost to capacity in an effort to catch some privacy from her family in the other room.
âYeah, I donât even know how she finds something to do every night. I mean- itâs Wednesday, there canât be much open tonight.â You laid your head back onto your pillow, staring up at your ceiling.
âI mean, it sounds like sheâs got wicked stamina,â Lily joked. You laughed with her. You missed her knowing smirk whenever she joked with you.
âYeah I guess so. Hey, have you heard from James recently? I keep trying to catch him but havenât been able to get through.â Your smile fell a bit, hoping Lily would offer some reassurance about your missing boyfriend.
âUh yeah- him, the guys and I went out the other night to a pub- thatâs why I didnât pick up Saturday. I thought he wouldâve called you afterwards.â Your frown deepened. You knew Quidditch was going to eat up his time but you didnât think he wouldnât have any time at all for a quick catch up.
âHe didnât- but Iâm sure heâs fine. Iâll try him again a bit laterâ You and Lily talked for a while longer before she had to leave for work. You checked the time- you should get to bed soon but you couldnât without trying James one more time.
Ring. Ring. Ring. Ri-
âHello?â
âJames? Finally- I feel like I havenât heard your voice in forever.â You smiled.
âLove, I am so sorry about not picking up- I know these collect calls are a lot- Iâve just been busy with quidditch and work-â
âHey no- I get it. Iâve been pretty locked in too.â You sat up, turning to look out the window next to your bed. âIâm just glad I got through to you.â
You and James talked for what seemed like forever, though in reality it was only an hour or two. When you two finally hung up you felt a sense of relief wash over you. In the back of your mind you were worried James might have been avoiding you for whatever reason.Â
Yours and Jamesâs calls became more frequent after that- even if it was just a quick call to say âI love youâ. You even started going out with your roommate- maybe she finally caught on to your loneliness and started inviting you out with her and her friends.
Things were looking up. For a while.
You had originally planned to return home for the winter holidays, wanting to check in on your mother and friends, but as work picked up you began to doubt that you would make it back. For some reason your professors believed it was a good idea to assign a ton of homework for the winter break- and your father began insisting on you getting a part time job to fill some of the empty spaces in your life.
âJames I-â
âNo I understand- youâre still adjusting over there. I just thought it wouldnât be this long until I saw you againâ James was pacing in his kitchen. Euphemia and Fleamont watched their son with worry. They had never seen him so distressed.
âI know darling, but I didnât think I would be this busy during the holidays.â You were sat on the edge of your bed. A stack of paperwork waited for you a couple feet away. âAnd Iâm really busy right now so could we just- talk about this later?â You felt yourself getting a little choked up- but held back any tears.
âYeah- yeah whatever. Talk to you later y/n.â James sounded defeated as he slammed the phone back on the hook. He grabbed his coat and walked out the front door.
You on the other hand tried to get your bearings together because no matter what the state of your relationship was- your homework wasnât going to wait.
---
You and James didnât talk much after that. You didnât know how to talk to him since it looked like you would be in America for longer than planned. The next time you called him you were on spring break.
âHey James.â When you spoke your voice was nervous. You didnât want to fight with him again.
âHi lovely.â There was a moment of silence before he spoke again. âUhm, howâs school?â
âGood, itâs good. Lotâs of work, per usual. But⊠good.â It was awkward. It was never awkward. Not with James.
âThatâs uh- good to hear. Quidditch is going well. We won this past weekend and everyone came to see it. Remus got trashed at the after party if you can believe it,â You smiled at this. You knew he would be doing great things. You wanted to be there for him more than anything.
âThatâs amazing,â You wanted the best for him, and since your last talk your mind has been racing. In the back of your mind you knew you needed to let go before it was harder for both of you.
This was the farthest thing from what you wanted to do.
âJamie,â James stopped his ramble about how the weather had been recently, âJames, I-â you started tearing up. Despite your best efforts your voice began to betray you.
âWhatâs wrong lovely?â Oh how you wanted one of his famous James Potter hugs right now.
âI- itâs been really hard being so far from you all. And all I want- all Iâve ever wanted is the best for you. I just- I donât think-â You stopped to take a breath âI think we should break up.âÂ
âWhat? Y/N what are you talking about?â James swore he could feel his heart shattering.
âI mean think about it James, we never have time to call- who knows when Iâm going to make it back over there. Itâs just- it isnât realistic for us to stay together. Itâs hurting us both. I want you to go far in your career and you canât do that if youâre staying up until the crack of dawn to talk to meâ It took everything for you to not break down. âI donât think this is working anymore.â
James was quiet for a moment, on his end of the line he was in shock. He knew things had been hard and the two of you had been distant recently but nothing could have prepared him for this.
âIs that what you want?â
No.
âYes.â You squeezed your eyes shut, a single tear rolling down your cheek. You ran a hand over your face before speaking again. âI love you so much James, I think I always will. But this is too hard on the both of us to prolong the inevitable any more than we already have. I hope we can still be friends but the pressure of a relationship from so far away and so much uncertainty on when weâll even be able to talk to each otherâŠâ
James was quiet again.
Fleamont had walked into the kitchen where James was sitting on the counter next to the phone. His son had been worried about the state of his relationship- even going so far as to inquire about plane tickets to America but he couldnât find a good enough time.
On a certain level James knew what you were talking about. He was only getting busier the more he practiced for quidditch and looking for a place to move out into now that he had a steady income.
On a certain level, James agreed with you. He just didnât want to.
âWe can work it out. Iâll call more and- and I can come visit you-â You shook your head even though he couldnât hear you.
âJamesâŠâ You trailed off. Just like you had at the airport when you left. He knew that you had made up your mind. âThis- calling every night, and then having to do work after, itâs- itâs exhausting. Iâm so tired of giving myself hope that a relationship over the phone will work forever.â
âYouâre-â James sniffed, his own tears forming in his eyes, âYouâre probably right.â
With that you hung up the phone, finally allowing yourself to break down. Your roommate came in, stunned when she saw you hunched over and crying. She sat next to you on your bed and held you. You sobbed into her shoulder for the rest of the night.
After you had hung up James didnât know what to do with himself. He hung up the phone and walked past his father and out the door. He soon found himself at Sirius and Remusâs apartment a couple blocks away and when they answered the door itâs like they could tell what happened.
An over the ocean call is how I told him âthis isnât working anymoreâ...
