An epilogue set a few months later - some old friends visitĀ Credence and PercyĀ for dinner :)Ā
Percy had never spent so much time in the vegetable aisle before. And heād certainly never spent so long anxiously examining cabbages.
āIs this really necessary?ā Percy said, as Credence tried to decide between a large floppy-leaved cabbage and a purple wrinkly one. āHe doesnāt strike me as the type to notice much what he eats.ā
āTina said he was vegetarian,ā Credence said in worried tones, not for the first time that day.
The revelation had come as something as a shock, mainly because it had thrown all his dinner plans into disarray. And, as the domestic cookery heād learned only had to satisfy a meat-and-potatoes man like Percy, it was something of a challenge, too.
Eventually, after some further debate over canned versus dried beans--to which Percy contributed absolutely nothing--they were in a position to pay for their produce and go home.
Mrs Apfel bustled to the front to serve them. Credence was her favourite customer and she particularly enjoyed discussing his purchases with him. Unfortunately for Percy, she enjoyed throwing approving glances in his direction even more--Percy still couldnāt understand why everyone was so obsessed with his love life.
āA pleasure to see you again, Mr Barebone,ā she said. āAnd you too, Mr Graves. What a great quantity of greens! So good for the blood, you know, keeps it thick and strong--you have to think about these things at my age.ā
As she was barely a decade older than he was, Percy resolutely declined to comment.
āWeāve a special guest coming to dinner tonight,ā Credence offered. āHeās a vegetarian.ā
āA vegetarian!ā This seemed to have made Mrs Apfelās day--soon everyone in the shop would know that Percival Graves, Director of Magical Security, was entertaining a vegetarian for dinner. āWell, I donāt know much about them,ā she said, ābut Iām sure they must be good for business!ā And her laugh positively rang round the store.
Outside, the leaves had really started to fall. The sky high above was very crisp and blue and the air was cool. As it was such a particularly beautiful day, they decided to walk home past the butchers, for two fat steaks to go with the leftovers tomorrow.
āActually,ā Credence said, as they stepped out onto the sidewalk again, āthereās another special guest coming tonight.ā
āOh, really?ā Percy said. āWhoās the second?ā
āJacob,ā Credence said.
āQueenieās Jacob?ā Percy tried to think of any other Jacobs he might know. Since Credence had come out of his shell more, it was possible there was another lurking around the peripheries of his social life.
Credence nodded to affirm it would indeed be Queenieās Jacob.
āI havenāt met him yet, have I?ā said Percy. āWhatās he like?ā
āYeah, um,ā Credence said, as they drew up in front of their building. āAbout thatā¦ā
