I left the ministry in 2010. And the church. I visit a good one now and then. My first Sunday not going to church was weird. It was a beautiful, sunny, warm day. I smoked a nice cigar. I went for a nice walk. I loved the freedom and the laziness of that morning. It took me a while to get used to it. It began to dawn on me: this is awesome, and I absolutely love my Sunday mornings now. I absolutely love my life post-church. All the warnings about leaving the church were false. I don’t need a covering. I don’t need a teacher. I don’t need protection. I don’t need authority. I don’t need to separate myself from unbelievers. I don’t need to pay tithes. I don’t need approval. Sure, there are benefits to being part of a flock… things like community, support, friendship. But, with desire, effort, and work, you can build these things outside the fold. I did. You can too! This paper was fascinating (thanks, JP), but I pull this small quote out in reference to 1. the tendency I and others have of thinking the grass is always greener on the other side: this goes against living in the moment and appreciating the things we actually have. I need to fight against this and appreciate my life and the people in it. This leads to 2. the tendency many have of taking people for granted. It's not fair, perhaps, to say that men do this with the women in their lives, but I don't know, it can seem like that. One of my fave musicians right now, Teddy Thompson, even has a song about it called "The One I Can't Have" all about never being satisfied, the "love disease, it's known as chronic hard to please". I get this. This is not to say anyone ever should settle, but that tendency Ross & Ward mentioned above is dangerous and can lead to walking away from happiness and gifts that are on ones lap. Another song leaps to mind, "You're Going to Lose That Girl" by The Beatles:
If you don't treat her right, my friend, You're gonna find her gone, 'cause I will treat her right, and then You'll be the lonely one.
So, here's to embracing our lives, clinging fast to the good and not taking for granted that which we have and those who love us.
