The brief

A simple way of describing editorial design is a form of visual journalism. It can entertain, inform, instruct, communicate, educate or be a combination of these things. We would like you to choose from one of these contextual themes; Consumerism, Gender, Global Issues, Pychoanalysis, Hyper Connected World or the Anthropocene. Within your publication, you need to communicate an idea or a story through the presentation of your image and text; each of which will fulfil a different function. A header will usually have been written and laid out to grab attention, while a visual element or image might be to support or clarify the point being made from the body copy. 

Drawing on your first year design principles knowledge, this task will refresh your InDesign skills, and take your technical capabilities further. You will need to learn about the anatomy of a publication, the role of typography, art direction and using photography, and the principle components of layout. 

You will produce a 1500-word written piece in response to the themes provided (above), and literature from one of the Contextual Studies lectures. You will devise a critical commentary informed by current debate and contemporary practice, and use the visual language of your editorial design to communicate an understanding of your subject matter. You may choose to use placeholder text until you have generated your own copy. We’d like you where possible to generate your own image assets (photography or illustration).
