This beautiful woman I have known my whole life,

And adored for lifetimes before that,

Who has brought me to both laughter and tears,

And who has brought me life itself,

Gifted and fashioned out of love itself,

My mother, who only eats grapes with the skins removed.

And so I wash my hands and wrinkle my brow,

And begin careful finger surgery

Until the bowl is full of little naked grapes,

Their skin and purple blood on my hands

And the tissue next to me.

My fingers are grape purple.
