2/2 If they do the odd (more palatable) contract for various players, it puts them on the map, makes it less likely that their presence is going to make someone freak out because they're known entities. They can't be invisible, so being unremarkable is the next best option. Mercenaries also allows them to cultivate a wide pool of contacts (Like Russian drug dealers). Still shady as hell tho, and must mean a lot of soul searching, and the occasional bad call.

Yeah, I think you’re broadly right, but the thing I keep coming back to is that 1) they’re obviously absolutely fine with killing people if they consider it to be for the right reasons, and 2) as revealed by the Copley set-up that starts the movie, they are totally dependent on their employers giving them the right information. I cannot imagine that they have not at some point killed innocent people due to misinformation. I mean, the people in the opening of the film - do we think Copley deliberately only hired Certified Bad People Who Deserved To Die (tm) to guard the outside of the compound? I...do not think so. I like to imagine part of their horror afterwards was knowing that; but it’s certainly not directly present in the text. 

2/2 And then, when push came to shove (and in Halward's case, it took so little) they both abandoned their principles and went straight for the cliche evil magister handbook. So I wonder if somewhere in the back of Dorian's mind, he doesn't worry that may, maybe he too one day will be confronted to something that makes him decide the end justify the means and he'll fall like they did.

I don’t know, I don’t think it’s actually about like, blood magic as a concept? He even says that to the Inquisitor, and it’s one of the cultural things he and Solas share in common - what they would call blood magic isn’t the same as the definition the Chantry has.

2/2 And of course that is Outlander's cue to be terribly offended at the rudeness and how uncouth Other Spouse is and "At least your spouse was polite about it!", Other Spouse, who might not be Amavikka but who has a fairly good idea of what their spouse said translates as, just looks at them like it's the office.             

Pretty sure this is exactly how Obi-Wan got himself kicked out of the Whitesun-Lars house:

So Obi-Wan rocks up to the homestead when Luke is about three years old, because he figures it’s time to start the kid’s training, right? Only Beru says she doesn’t think that’s a very good idea, considering what happened to Luke’s father.

Obi-Wan experiences a moment of horrified vertigo, before he realizes that, of course, she believes Anakin died with the rest of the Jedi. That must be what she means.

(It isn’t what she means, but she doesn’t mean Vader either. Anakin left Tatooine as a child with a promise to come back as a Jedi and free all the slaves. But the Anakin she met as an adult, a Jedi, seemed to have forgotten all about that...)

So Obi-Wan steals himself against the memories and goes into a spiel about how important it is for young Force sensitives to be trained. Halfway through he realizes it’s not that different from the speech he would have given any parent of a Force sensitive child under the Republic, and the grief nearly overwhelms him again.

But Beru just keeps saying she doesn’t think it’s a good idea. She says it more and more forcefully, but she hasn’t actually asked him to leave, so he doesn’t.

It’s when he tries to engage with young Luke directly that Owen comes in from the garage, takes one look at the scene, and tells Obi-Wan to get the hell out of their house and never come back again.
