βThe most generous of double albums and therein (for me) lies its failing. Although Prince wrote all of the songs, he performs on only roughly half of the tracks, offering the others to his many disciples and muses: Mavis Staples, The Time and the teenage Tevin Campbell. (Hmm, what happened to him?) The album also features the legendary George Clinton duetting with Prince on We Can Funk. . This is in fact a really funky album, in a pop funky way as opposed to the dirty fuzzy bump βnβ grind funk of The Black Album. I love the skittering drums on Release It from The Time and the declaration of independence of New Power Generation. The best songs by far are those that Prince keeps to himself, my highlights being The Question of U and Joy in Repetition. Although I think part of the albumβs general meh-ness may be due to the fact that its lead single is arguably one of Princeβs worst singles: Thieves In The Temple. . The film Graffiti Bridge was an unmitigated disaster, which didnβt help this soundtrack shift units, and despite being a pretty diehard Prince fan, Iβve never seen it. Thanks to the βwonderβ of YouTube Iβve just watched the trailer and can see why it sucked. Iβll stick to Purple Rain and the Sign O The Times concert movie thanks very much. At least Under A Cherry Moon has Kristen Scott Thomas in it...β .
