It has almost been a year since I graduated from university! I obtained a BA in Psychology (for those of you that don’t know this already!). This past year flew by and I’m already slowly preparing for my move to grad school! However, I though it would be important for me to share with you a couple of tips, so that you can enjoy your graduation day! I didn’t, so if you want to know how I was feeling about graduating from university one year ago, read THIS.
TIP #1 Wear comfortable shoes!
This is probably the most important tip I could give you! If you’re female and you’re thinking about wearing a nice pair of heels, make sure you are able to walk and stand in them for a long period of time! If you cannot do one or the other in heels, wear something else! Many chose oxford style loafers as a flat option and still looked great during the day! Additionally, during commencement ceremony you will probably need to walk relatively fast and take stairs, so prevent an embarrassing fall from happening by wearing flats!
TIP #2 Do your own make-up!
I went to a beauty salon to get my make-up done the morning of the commencement ceremony and I regret spending a lot of money on a face that did not look like me, nor matched my clothes well. Additionally, the make-up artist used a foundation, which oxidised, so I looked like an orange and had to remove all of my face make-up and re-do it with my own foundation! Talk about a waste of money! I was extremely unhappy with the way they did my make-up (i.e. it looked like an Instagram make-up look and was just too much), so I would recommend to spice up your everyday face (if you do wear make-up) by wearing eye shadow/lipstick or ask a friend who’s good at it to help you out! I think the trick is to look like yourself in photos! In retrospect, I wish I did my own make-up on my graduation day! You can look up effortless day time make-up looks for work, even graduation on YouTube and test it out before the big day!
TIP #3 Outfit is important!
I care about what I wear. I have been dreaming about my graduation outfit throughout my senior year in undergrad because I’m that extra! I decided to ask my aunt, who is a seamstress, to design me a jumpsuit and I LOVED it! I received a TON of compliments on the day and it’s still one of my favourites! If you’re struggling to find graduation dresses, I recommend looking on ASOS or Topshop for occasionwear. Some additional tips to keep in mind:
You don’t have to wear a dress. You can opt for a two-piece set of a top and a skirt, or a top and trousers. Or you can wear trousers with a button up shirt, etc.
Make sure that the item of clothing that you’re choosing to wear suits the academic environment. Choose a dress that is not too revealing as you want to avoid something falling out. I’d recommend avoiding off the shoulder and deep v style dresses, as well as making sure that your dress length is mid thigh/above the knees (the same skirt length rule applies for skirts).
Avoid wearing black because most people will so it’s good to stand out! Also if you’re wearing a cap and gown then usually they’re black too, so something brighter underneath will help you stand out!
Don’t wear a full length gown. Once again, if you’re wearing a cap and gown, you long dress might get caught in the layers or your shoes and falling is something you want to avoid!
Wear your hair down. Your graduation cap will ruin your hair do, so save time and wear your hair straight/curled. Also use pins to ensure that the cap doesn’t fly off your head!
TIP #4 Photos!
They usually don’t allow you to have any items with you during the ceremony, but since my jumpsuit had pockets, I sneaked my phone with me! Ask your friends and family members to take photos not only of just you but also with all of your friends and family. They don’t have to be professional and they will be a nice memory to have! I took all of mine with my phone! Also, professional graduation photo shoots were not a thing at my university, so I didn’t think of doing one. If it is available, maybe you can have a photographer friend take your grad photos for you!
TIP #5 Attend the rehearsal!
It’s important to know how the events will follow during graduation and where and when you need to stand/sit/walk! So attend the rehearsal! It’s usually the evening before the graduation ceremony. Rehearsals are helpful because the organisers run through the program with your whole class, you get to see where you will be sitting and who the people closest to you will be, so that you don’t get lost. At my university students were assigned seats in alphabetical order, so I had the front row seat but it meant that we walked out last from the stage. So attend the rehearsal to know what will happen during your graduation day!
