Vera was asked to be present during the search of Joan's apartment after her disappearance. Even if she was presumed dead, the police didn't want to make the same mistake twice.

As they checked everything and were about to leave, Vera noticed a photograph. She secretly took it and kept it. Vera convinced herself she was doing this because, whoever Joan was, she didn't deserve to be forgotten; something had to remain. Something connected to her existence on this earth. And every person should have someone who remembers them.

Grace found this photograph while she and her mother were playing hide-and-seek. Under the bed, in the dusty box.

When they finished playing, she asked her mother, "Who is that woman who looks like the Mona Lisa?"

Vera asked again who Grace was talking about, and Grace replied that she had seen a photograph of a woman under the bed, and immediately remembered her mother telling her about the Mona Lisa.
