A bunch of satokos for one of my fave time looping lesbians. I wonder if there’s tierlist of all the time looping lesbians there are. I really like gousotsu and what it does for satoko as a character but also a lot of what I take issue with in higurashi is kind of addressed.
a lot of people feel that rika is out of character in gousotsu because of how closely she comes to giving up, how her motivation to attend st. lucia seems "random", and because of how she neglects to listen to satoko's feelings even though that is very much a core tenant of the original story-- listening to your friends when they cry (ehehe) for help.
but i would argue that she has internalized the simultaneous lesson that is at the forefront of her personal struggle in higurashi-- that defying inevitable fate and never giving in-- more intensely than is even good for her after 1983.
when she decides she wants to experience life outside hinamizawa (which is not "random" but a very natural evolution of being trapped there and only there for 100 years) she pursues that goal with absolute determination, even when satoko is outwardly opposed to it. she wants to go to st lucia, and she wants satoko there with her, and thats that. she acts inconsiderate and ignorant, but in her mind this is not immoral, but a refusal to accept a fate other than the ideal. in 1983 that fate was her loteral death-- and though in gousotsu that fate is simply living her life and her dream without her beloved, she seems to regard it with the same ferocity she learned to bring in minnagoroshi and matsurbayashi.
she works nonstop for years not only to get herself but also to make sure satoko gets in to st. lucia. we mainly see this time from satoko's perspective, but i see rika's hard headedness about this goal as her trying to embody that lesson.
so when the tables are turned around on her, and she is, to her knowledge, inexplicably thrust back into her own hell, of course she would waver. not only did she take those lessons to heart and somehow ended up dragged down into hell again, but this version of 1983 is random and chaotic and different every time. what has her determination got her? why should she believe that pushing through yet again will even stick, this time? all largely without hanyuu, who was simultaneously her motivation to stay alive and her greatest anchor in the original story.
i think sotsu absolutely drops the ball in terms of rounding out these concepts and delivering an ending that is at all satisfying. the lack of remorse from either girl is kind of unsettling, and as much as i love the theatrics that are added to their battle, i dont think its followed up with an equally weighted resolution between them, of understanding and forgiveness. its instead just implied by one scene where they hold hands. its really bad! they might as well have just depicted their relationship being broken forever and itd be a more compelling ending.
but i dont think rika acts out of character in gou, in the "prequel" section or even in her initial reaction to satoko's betrayal, where she, even then, *insists* that satoko get over it and stay with her. she acts like a brat, for sure, but to say there is no explanation for her behavior is reductive.
in the original story, the group's general need to listen when others cried is central to and neccessary to the goal of the story-- to save rika and therefore everyone from being stuck in an eternal loop of miscommunication, despair and thus, the resulting death and violence. from this struggle, rika develops the belief that only absolute faith and cooperation with others can lead to a "miracle". in gousotsu, that determination that she gained in matsuribayashi is instead *opposed* to the need to listen when others cry-- particularly to the cries of her dearest and closest. i dont think rika has willingly or randomly forgotten this need. i think she is seeing the forest for the trees. her miracle should be achievable, she thinks, even in the face of a will as strong as satoko's to refuse to go along with it.
I'd be a lot more interested in gousotsu if I didn't think the artstyle was kinda shit
