.  Both are varsity students. Zach is a second year law student at the University of Namibia and is 19 years old. While 20-year-old Shanwell is studying pre-engineering at Namibia University of Science and Technology. The duo has set them to releasing creativity in any way possible. Last weekend I paid the guys a visit at Zach’s condo and had an awesome interview that left me feeling more creative than I had always thought.

When I asked them how they met Zach had this to say, “We met on the first day of school, in high school; He (Shanwell) was the first friend I had in school. We were standing in a queue at an assembly point, I am not sure if he was standing in front or behind me, I don’t still remember how he conversation started but ever since we have just gelled.” Shanwell jokingly interjected immediately and told his version, “He poked me….and I was like yoh whats up…my name is sticks bruh…we are at the same school now let’s be friends.” The duo seems to hold their relationship not only as a friendship but as a brotherhood. Since then they have stuck together and discovered their ability to entertain and create together.

They began dancing in school; they would dance at school with a bunch of other guys for fun and also participated in dancing competitions at school. They then furthered their interests after school, however the group started with seven members and since then they have witnessed people leaving the group and new members being integrated. The two have stayed constant, shot videos and would practice at Shanwell’s house. After discovering that people keep coming onto the group and leaving the group they decided to nullify the vacant positions and the group would now stay as a duo. However they have collaborated with other dancers for video shoots. They entered a school talent show while they were 12th graders and won the competition.

The two started a Facebook page and they would post pictures of themselves dancing however one audience had an eye on their talent and happened to be an armature film director who wanted to develop his skills.  They began shooting videos and the  audience received them well.  We now shoot the videos ourselves now, we borrow our shooting equipment from friends and we shoot the videos ourselves, for example the Parliament Gardens video, I would dance and Shanwell would film me and I would do the same if he was supposed to be in the scene.

The name mainframe is intriguing, so I had always wondered how they came up with the name; Shanwell says that, “the name actually came from one of the ex-members, after the group in its infant days had decided to brainstorm on names, everyone else had suggested names such as robotics, psychotics and all…but we wanted something energetic and memorable and Mainframe happened to be that name. The group in reality is energetic and memorable. The name was well suiting for their art and personalities. When I asked them of the emotions they give off individually when dancing, the bromance in them was fired up, Shanwell declined to describe the emotions he gives off, but opted to describe Zach’s. Shanwell therefore describes his co-dancer not only as an energetic and explosive but a dancer who interprets the music; you can feel the music in the energy he gives off. On the other hand Zach believes that his partner is rooted and allows his body to mimic the music.

On inspiring other people they believe that they took a leap of faith to decide to take their art to stage and allow the world to say it. A leap of faith because other people may not be aware of what comes out of the experience of entertaining people, Zach says” We are blessed enough to have that courage to put ourselves out there, because creative arts is more than an objective, it is a dream and people should just live it out.”

When it comes to taking up dance as a profession, they both have desires to open up platforms for other artists of all sorts to put themselves out there. Shanwell points out that, “Even if we start practicing in the different fields we both are studying for, we would like to branch out and open up opportunities for creative artist of all sorts, we hope to open up a studio Mainframe Studio or something of that sort so that we nature and release all sorts of creativity in various ways.

MAINFRAME participated in the Namibia Talent Show at the National Theater of Namibia, and came third in the competition. The duo has mixed feelings on the show, primarily because the show had originally been planned to be aired on national television as well as price money for the runner ups had been promised, however due to lack of sponsorship and license disagreements the show could not have been as big as it could have. Despite the obstacles MAINFRAME seem to be in agreement that they are in it for the passion, in their own words, “If we upload a video on the internet and people like it…then we are good.”

Collectively as a group they are fans of  Les Twins, Ian Eastwood, Non-Stop and Choreo Cookies. I swear to you they gave me a playlist to post but some how the device did not record that part  during our interview. They will give us another one next time we future them. But I hope that their story gave you hope and energy to go on, in the words of MAINFARE hope is, “what everyone hold on to when everything is about to hit the fan, it is what makes you stronger than the obstacles you encounter…”

GotTheSerendipityFactor: What project are you working on now?

Rodney Badza: Well I have just completed my first project for this year that was my first solo exhibition, which opened on the 31st of May this year. However I am about to start on a new project in which I will be working with a local non-governmental organization called Awareness Africa. The project aims at establishing art centers in and around Zimbabwean ghetto neighborhoods with the sole intention of diverting attention from drug and alcohol abuse, and aiming towards more productive activities

GTSF: Ever since I have known you have always been drawing, when did you make the decision that you were going to go into mainstream art?

RB:Well the decision came after I joined First Floor Gallery Harare(FFGH) in 2014.  Working with artists of various natures led to my interest in the various forms of art. Also during my degree studies I had to take up more than just drawing so that also led to the decision of going mainstream

GTSF: You have also adopted other forms of visual arts, were you always versatile?

RB: Yes I was but I just never showed it, I was less confident in the other stuff I could do back then so I ended up just revealing one side

GTSF: What is that one thing that people can identify your designs with?

RB: Well cant really say I’ve got that one thing that says “me” but In drawings and painting I like realism so in every work that I make, I try to put in a pinch of realism no matter how abstract it might be. In graphics I’m into graffiti and curly font, I will squeeze one of the 2 in every bit of my work. But I guess the only thing that people can identify my work by is my logo or my signature

GTSF: What is this figure and what does it represent?

RB: It is my logo which is simply my name, the initial of my first and second name then my last name In full. It just represent who I am.

GTSF: You recently held a solo exhibition a few weeks ago, themed “The Creator’s Palette,” How was the experience?

RB: Overwhelming I must say. An artist’s first solo show is one of the most important things in an artist’s career. For me the experience was just some think one cannot consider explainable, so was the response and support I got from friends, fans, family and well-wishers. So I must say this was one of the best moments of the year so far

GTSF: The last time we met was at an arts Exhibition presented by Masimba Hwati, who do you identify as a role model?

RB: Well I would say my role model is Valerie Kabov, the Director of  FFGH

GTSF: What does your work focus on?

RB: My work touches on social issues, anything that happens in my life mostly. My life inspires my work

GTSF: What’s the last show that you saw?

GTSF: What’s the last show that surprised you? Why?

RB: Well that would be three things; camera, laptop and pencil set, they seem equally important

RB: Well in everything I see, but mostly what’s happening in my life, you know, the stuff that affects me personally.

RB: Yes I do, I have recently started a collection of young upcoming artists’ work.

RB: Well the first one was ‘The lions in my living room’, which is a painting of lions that actually hangs in our family home living room; my mother bought it to show her support to me lol

RB: Stephen Cohen’s performances, particularly the one at the Cape Town art fair earlier this year

RB: That would be the last book I have read to this point, “Green eggs and Ham-Dr Seuss”, my 4-year-old niece makes me read it out loud for her every night so I guess it must be a really great one

RB: “The girl with a dog by Wycliffe Mundopa”, that’s my current favorite painting

GTSF: What would you do to get it?

RB: Trust me, you don’t wanna know

GTSF: What international art destination do you most want to visit?

RB: Zimbabwean Contemporary art, particularly the young upcoming artists

David Wamambo: Talking to Rodney about his work gave me so much life. I hope that this interview revived or encouraged you to live your dreams and follow your passion. I believe in harnessing diverse talents and that we should not be forced to conform to one standard.  Africa and today’s youth in general are creative minds and it would be a shame if they are not supported. It’s high time that key stakeholders consider art as an industry in which people may earn an income from, but apart from income, art is a form of expression and identity and thus channels that foster freedom of thought should be promoted in society. Lets celebrate art, lets celebrate diversity.

Two years really, are just an indicator that there is more to be accomplished and greater opposition is to be faced. That gesture will forever deserve some gratitude. I started blogging late 2013 after Brighton John successfully nagged and persuaded me to blog with him on a pop culture blog @theredcirclezim. Since then I have been so ecstatic about blogging. Brighton, Sean Tafirenyika, Mona Lisa Dube and I shred the blog and our friendship has continued to grow. I am so grateful to my foundation, my family, I am going on over indebted to my mother Benita and her kids. They have supported me in various ways. They are all lovely and I would not have chosen a better family myself. Guys I can’t imagine my life not being the last born. Asante Sana. I have too much love for you. Would have written all your names but the family keeps on growing so the list would be too long. However I welcome little “Elie” Elisha Tangeni to the clan. Of course my all time friend Jonathan. To all those who have believed in my vision, to exude hope and make happy discoveries I am grateful. But behold for tomorrow is yours determine the world in its enigmas and promises. Walk down life’s winding pathways with courage, humor and hope. Savouring fully your trials and tribulations. Paint the city red with joy. Remember what you exude is what you attract. Be positive always, energies are contagious. We may face rejection and opposition on a daily basis. However I encourage us to live life to the fullest, by making it an eternal ambition to not need external acceptance, but gain internal comfort in our own skins. Let’s be keen to be self approved,  and not needy of recognition. Mediocrity also has no excuse. Excellence in all we do is achieved through beginning all our endeavours from the get go, with soul, creativity and love. They call it Meraki in Greece, the art of leaving a piece of yourself in every piece of work you touch. Lets always remember the world is nit a wish granting factory. Things won’t always work on our way. Regardless of that; we need your joy, we need your hope, we need you to use your brains. The world has become so dangerous. Let’s restore hope for humanity through our different channels.

Over the past years, I have been exposed to the works of Robin Sharma and music of Coldplay. One key lesson I have learnt from both craftsmen is that the fundamental ground upon which all true self improvement is built is called self love. Because in the end, no matter which way you turn, if you do not love yourself, you will self sabotage yourself at one point. You will think that for some reason or another, you aren’t worthy. And you think that why would you truly want to achieve anything? And this is not just about achievement. This is about how you approach yourself everyday. This is what you see when you look in the mirror. We make so many snap judgements about ourselves being subconscious about them, that are filled with negativity, hurting us before we can even begin to heal.

The messages shared by Sir Sharma, Chris Martin and company, have revealed to me the antidote. Self love. I say this with your hope that it will not be confused with creating some narcissistic image of ourselves but self love, that inner greatness that no external can take away. Self love is an infinite resource you can share with others.

I hope that my blog offers some hope for all who read my posts and that at some point in your lives you reach a position where you are liberal enough to allow yourself to leave free of all negative limitations and  sentiments placed upon you by naysayers. I hope in the coming years I exude hope, help  build dreams. However I acknowledge that all these drams aren’t that ng copy ng man can do alone and can be the optimum results. I need you. Talk to me. Tell me your story and let me share it. Com let’s spread hope together and make happy discoveries.

So I so happened to be in studio today soon after Ruffy slayed #TheWeekendCruise on Unam Radio. Damn! She looked as gorgeous as all day, er’ day…queening always.  Ruffy  in as much as she has a personality that resembles royalty and moves like a super model, she is very soulful when you get to know her at a personal level. Like any normal 90’s kid, I would want WiFi too, wherever I go. As I said before Ruffy is very bubbly and friendly. A very welcoming personality. I have always felt comfortable with her since the day I first met her. such a cool person to those in her circle. Every time I see her she reminds me how every moment with the people you care are precious and worth keeping close to the heart.

Miss Ruffy has a well toned body…like hott is an understatement. that body deserves the best skin care treatment. But of course the relaxation of the mind that comes with it.

7 A Drive & Ice Cream

Windhoek is hot….ice cream is so necessary, but taking a drive around the city is one of the things I would find perfect for a chilled soulful date. You talk, get inspired and during drives that are sentimental you learn of your partner’s desires, it just happens, they open up about their goals. That way you know what they aim for and your goals are some how more likely to be in sync when they are communicated.  When I asked Ruffy what she thought about relationships, she said that for her love is all about wanting the best to happen for the other person in the relationship.

The Art Of Making Happy Discoveries: Simple Reminders

1. So please tell us who Ruffy is in six words Talented, a go-getter, a broadcaster, an achieving woman , an encourager and a Royalty. 2. What was it like growing up as Rufaro Chakanyuka? Wow that’s such a broad question, but i’ll start by saying I was the last born for nine years before my little sister came along *sidenote: we look like twins, and truth is middle children rule :p I have an older sister , so we are three beautiful ladies from the Chakanyuka clan. It was fun, I would like to think I was the favoured child…..during high school years I spent the entire week at school from 8am till 6pm and weekends doing extra curricula activities! I was the definition of a ‘busy body’ …..hahaha , but we took and still take birthdays seriously in our family, so there was always something to celebrate! 3. Ruffy your family is in Botswana and you were based in South Africa before coming here, how has the experience of different cultures influenced your personality? If anything I realised I am not alone in this called life. Met many amazing people in both countries who have now become family. The eclectic cultures, surroundings and environment allowed me to surrender to the fullness of my awkwardness / uniqueness. Today I realise I grew more into the person I am this moment, knowing that I have to hold on to my originality with both hands, as tight as possible, and just rock with it! Goes with saying and I got more flavour and spice to my personality. Variety has always thrived heirso!

4. So Ruffy you are also a model,this essentially means you get to know of the latest trends in fashion at first hand, tell us what inspires your style? I’d have to say my mood , Life mantra of the season and Brand ID . Over the years my style doesn’t really follow trends when I think about. If I see a trend I’m feeling I will purchase a few items I like from the collection, however I try not to try hard with my fashion. So my style is ‘Easy quick and wear /You don’t have to iron look!’ Here’s a little heads up, I am super fond of little dresses in every colour, and half the time I’d rather design a garment and get that outfit tailored to fit me to perfection. 5. Who is your style icon? Geez , Do I have one? With such amazing brands out there it’s really hard to choose. My heart is weak, so let me say I love everybody ;-) and King Bey ;-* 6. You have been on radio, TV and you MC a lot of events including the 2014 NAMAs’ Behind the scenes and Outside Radio Broadcast during the NAMAs’ in 2014 , and 2015 edition of the NAMAs’ blue carpet, what has been the journey like? It’s been such a great experience, and I believe whole heartedly this is what I want to do with my life! I was born for Tv, Radio, Magazines, Runways and Jet-setting  There’s always a little bit of anxiety when all the audition processes start but you just have to get out there and go for what you want . I love the NAMAs family, and #TeamRuffy is super glad that for the last two years they were hosted in Swakop ! Honey , there’s nothing like travelling to a different town to go shine.

7. I love listening to the WEEKEND CRUISE, and its arguably one of the best weekend shows in the country, tell us what goes on backstage while preparing for the WEEKEND CRUISE? Aww thank you  It all starts with a Friday night tweet to the Twam, letting them know i’ll be rocking the republic the next day followed by a few IG posts as well. Then on Saturday I arrive 30mins before the show starts, I do all my prep work during the week. So when I catwalk into studio I plunk my bags down, connect all my headsets and recording gadgets. Then I say a little prayer over the system and the show starts *sidenote: I record my show shows two ways, the first one being ‘audio’ and the second way ‘vlogs’ from my swagged out phone.* When I’m off air there’s a lot of dancing that goes down in between posting up on social media about what tracks are playing. 8. Being a model,student, broadcaster and MC is a lot of work, What drives Ruffy everyday? That check, that coin! Hahaha there aint nothing basic about me, I strongly believe the blessing of the Lord maketh rich and adds no sorrow with it, so if something I want or would love to attempt then there shall be no strife when it comes to executing it. I close my eyes and meditate how far this vision I have in my mind and I realise, I cant leave this world ntil I’ve tried my damn hardest to share my dreams with the world and achieve them too. 9. While preparing for this interview I did a bit of stalking, they call it research but and I saw a picture of you with Casper Nyovest, how was it like meeting him Haha ok ok, *pats weave* Well the weekend I met up with him was one of the bestest last year. We say it was #Nyobest  I first received an email with his music , I remember falling off my bed and checking it over 10 times if it was for real. Then a few months later him and his crew came through to Namibia over Hart Van Windhoek weekend last year and the club promoter organised for my Tv crew to have a sit down interview with him at the Hilton. He’s such a great guy, I asked him some burning questions which he answered openly and he even wished my sister a happy birthday. There was a moment after the interview I wished he had wished me Happy Birthday on record :p and I was almost singing mama I made it after the interview….lol…. I also appreciate how he said he liked my hip hop swag and that Bonang would embrace me if I did go back to South Africa. So Queen B I’m coming ….woop woop. David let’s do drinks one day and i’ll tell you all about it ;-)

10. It is evident that your show has seen various people of note walk through the doors of UNAM’s Radio, how has that impacted your view of people in the limelight? Firstly a huge thank you to every studio guests over the last 4 years who have taken a short left to #TheWeekendCruise. Y’all push me to be on top of my game and to be 100 subconsciously and yoh hugs to you for allowing my crazy. I realise we are all human and that all we want is love, laughter, blessed events to occur in our lives, goals to be achieved and for people to keep it real with us …oh and delicious food. I realised Team work really does make the dream work , and if you can execute your dream/ vision alone you haven’t dreamt big enough! 11. You are the #BaddestChickOnTV&FM, your sig-tune is #BoomBaby and the mantra is #RuffyRockingTheRupblics, what do you enjoy the most about Twitter? Oh boy, Twirrraaaaa! Love how creative people get creative with 140 characters. Like there are some awesome tweeps outchea. Even if I’m not tweeting I’m there to die of laughter with some hilarious hashtags. Twitter is also a tool to stay up to date with trends with the tworld. Whether it’s , Business vs Entertainment vs Education. 12. Today’s youth seem to be fixated on keeping up appearances, being hype and cool has become the everyday YOLO moment, what disappoints you the most on social media? One fast growing concern is the ‘cyber bullying’. I be like, cat we just allow people to be who they want to be . We all have opinions but I think once you start attacking my morals, family, craft etc then we have a problem Houston. I joke with my friends sometimes and say “subtweet me don’t at me abeg !” I stick to the ‘Less than 5 Rule’ when it comes to social media. Now you can at me if you haven’t heard of it ….haha!

13. Ruffy you seem to be experiencing growth in a male dominated industry what have been your challenges being female in a field where men are predominant? Geez , like I don’t even pay attention to that Bih. I didn’t know it was male dominated because I know many females getting it outchea. If anything we are at par, but In just run my race Boo. The world has got to experience Ruffy, and I’m all about that. There’s no time to hear what society is trying to pin as a male dominated industry. 14.
