"So, what d'ya think of the new face?" (gotanewcoat)
The Master ignores the searing pain in his lower back. He ignores the vast chasm of hurt and warfare behind himself and the tiny fey fair-haired creature grinning up at him now. Â
He indulges instead in the sight of the one being who knows what he means before he realizes; who knows what makes him laugh and weep, rage and rest. The one being who saw something promising in his wrecked soul, took his hand, claimed ownership of him, and transformed him. A sun in whose shadow it is indeed very cold. There is nothing he would have not sacrificed or sold, once, to stand in the light of Theta Sigma again.
Little has changed.Â
âLetâs put it this way,â he breathes, voice deep and raspy with awe and yearning.  âIf you asked me to wait for you, for hours, on a very cold day in the rain, I would. Without question.âÂ
He draws very near her, then. He tucks wavy buttercream hair behind an ear, and tugs on the chain of her earring. Oh, she smells of engine grease and windburn. Sweet, wild and fugitive. Like always.
âHi. Youâre finally shorter than me.â Â

â... Do I... really want to know what youâre doing, Theta? If I asked you, right now, what this nonsense is about, would I want to know the answer? Would the answer even make any sense?â
âCould I help you?â Ryan asked, kneeling next to the Doctor as she worked on the console, buried in wires, âMâgood at this sort of thing, I was traininâ to be a mechanic. Promise not to touch anything unless youâve said so.â
âRyan Sinclair, I thought youâd never ask.â The Doctor grinned, scooting out from underneath the console & sitting up with a grin on her face. Her coat had been tossed aside & her sleeves rolled up, face covered in grease that had avoided her eyes only through the use of goggles. Even her hair was coated in the sticky liquid.
âSânot as glamorous as it looks sometimes - someoneâs over-used the custard cream machine & theyâve gotten stuck, messinâ with the hydraulics.â
Ryan tried to hide his amusement as the Doctor shimmied out from under the console, looking a bit like sheâd been dunked head first in yellowish oil. âYouâre literally the only person Iâve ever seen get into the custard creams. Personally, I prefer chocolate chip, but thatâs just me.â
He knelt next to her, rolling up her sleeves, then putting a hand against the side of the console for balance. The inside of the console was slick with mashed cookies and some sort of oil, the same yellow tone, that didnât look or smell like anything heâd ever encountered before. It was almost planty, like something alive. Was this ship a little bit alive? âMaybe itâs still got creams in the queue. So if more are cominâ it will just keep making a mess âtil we cancel the order. Sort of like a paper jam, yeah? Where do they come from? Those food machines in the kitchen?â
âErr- Ryan, we donât point fingers,â the Doctor said, scoffing as he pointed out she was the only one that had the custard creams. It was true, of course, but that didnât mean he needed to point it out.
The Doctor glanced to Ryan as he mentioned cancelling the order. The lever only brought up one custard cream at a time, & having him help hercancel the order would only show him just how much of a sweet tooth she had⌠how many times had she pressed that lever & had nothing come out? Was she really ready to share that with Ryan?
âNah, sheâs delicate - canât just compare her to a printer & go around cancellinâ orders. She made each ân every one of the custard creamslovinâly, ân you just wanna cancel âem?â the Doctor scoffed, shaking her head as if it would offend the ship more than her. âWhat we need tâdo is jusâ⌠talk tâher. âN maybe get a bucket for âem to all pour out into.â
Ryan opened his mouth to say that it might be more of an insult to the Doctorâs temperamental ship to have a load of biscuit mash leaking out of her, but instead he just shrugged and slapped his knees as he stood - âRight then. Findinâ a bucket.â He stepped away, moving to one of the rooms that hedged the console room, tucked away, where heâd seen the Doctor emerge from with an assortment of oddities.
Most of what was inside he was even to venture a guess at identifying, weird alien devices and a tin of what looked to be parts for the sonic⌠or possibly electric toothbrushes, but there were also boxes of spare coats, and sunscreen, wrenches and hammers, and⌠a bucket. Well, it wasnât exactly a bucket, more one of the plastic bins of coats, emptied out. He brought it out of the store room and held it out to the Doctor. âWill this work?â
"I'm sorry Ryan, but y'need to go home. It's for your own good so don't argue with me, don't ask questions. Jus' do as you're told."
It felt like a slap in the face. It felt like being a kid again, left on his Nanâs doorstep with a couple of suitcases. âI donât understand,â he finally managed. âDid I do somethinâ wrong?â that was a question, he realized. No, the answer would make it worse, either answer. He looked down at his shoes, taking a step back and pushing down confusion and heartbreak and anger, until he could look up at her without shouting or crying. âSorry, you said no questions. That was⌠Iâll just⌠um⌠go get mâstuff, if thatâs okay?â
âYeah, I mean â no, thatâs fine. Take all the time yâneed.â The Doctor said, shoving her hands in her pockets sheepishly. She hated saying goodbye to her friends, but it was better than the alternative. The incident with the Dalek & Aaron had made it clear just how far she was willing to go in this new face⌠& in Ryanâs desperation to save his father, theyâd almost both flown out the door.
Ryan wouldâve died, & it would have been her fault. Saying goodbye was painful, but it was better than him dying.
âRight,â Ryan said, feeling like a kicked dog limping away with his tail between his legs. He started for the stairs to the rest of the TARDISâs expanse, then stopped and turned back. He wasnât going to be left on a doorstop, not again. âNo. No, mâsorry, but all we been through, yâcan âleast tell me why. And what âbout the others, what have I done different?â
âIâm gonna tell them the same thing, Ryan. Youâve done nothinâ different, nothing wrongâŚâ she trailed off, standing at the console & looking at the controls as opposed to her friend. He didnât want to leave & it broke her hearts - just as much as telling Yaz & Graham to go would. âThe longer youâre with me, the more danger youâre in. Iâm not the woman yâthink I am. Iâm a monster, youâll all be safer without me in your lives.â
âYouâre not a monster,â Ryan said, the insecurity that being asked to leave had brought vanishing in a moment - if there was anything in this crazy universe that he was certain of, and that list was getting shorter with every trip in the TARDIS, it was that she was the furthest thing to a monster imaginable. âYouâre right daft though, to think so. Like, full on crazy.â
He crossed back over to the console, hesitantly putting a hand on her shoulder like Graham used to try to when heâd fall off his bike. âWe all knew what we were signinâ up for, remember? But travelinâ with you is the most amazinâ thing Iâve done, ever. And yeah, people dieâŚâ he paused, a crack of emotion in his voice, âlike Nan, and maybe one day that will be one of us, but people also die all the time and no one cares. No one stops. But you do. Like with the witch trials, yeah? A monster wouldnâtâve dove into icy water to save that lady. And a monster wouldâve killed mâdad or Lin straight out instead of tryinâ to work out a way tâsave them. Youâre not a monster âcos yâcanât save everyone, the monsters are them that donât even care. Or worse, are the ones causinâ it.
âBesides, weird things were always happeninâ when you werenât âround too. Like I almost died when those black cube things went nuts, me heart actually stopped for a bit, Nan said, but if Iâd been with you it mightâve been different. Or that Christmas when everyone did the Rooftop Challenge,â he was just a kid at the time but you remember spending Christmas tugging at your mumâs arm and begging her to come inside, no matter what age. âAnd Iâd be willinâ to bet most of the time you were out there somewhere, werenât you? Cause thatâs you. And if we hadnât known you, Graham and me, we probably wouldâve both been gobbled by that spider in the attic, yeah? So donât go tellinâ me itâs safer not knowinâ you.â
Send âgripâ to hold my museâs jaw (NOT ACCEPTING). Â
The Masterâs face is inches from the Doctorâs. In her anxiety-ridden features, he reads an infuriating tardiness. He wonders if she remembers all the times her previous faces discarded him as a hopeless dead weight, good only for mayhem, expendable, worthy of tossing out the rubbish chute into the churning seas of the cosmos. Does she remember all the times she failed to give him incentive to change for the better? To become again her bondmate and best friend? Â
âIf youâre looking for the parts of me you recognize in yourselfâthe you that youâre ashamed ofâthen Iâm sure you neednât look very far. I always was your easy target.â Â

(gotanewcoat) "I really don't think I know who I am anymore."
@gotanewcoat(based on this.)
âYouâre the Doctor. More, youâre Theta. One of, if not the best thing thatâs ever happened to this universe and, honestly, a whole number of others. Youâll always be that.â
âi saved your life. donât you owe me a little something?â he teased, a small grin on his face. not being serious. but he was interested in her. she was... different.
