I took a walk around the neighborhood after eating lunch; this was my first time in this part of the city, and even though it’s extremely industrial, I love this use of space along the Rouge River. I stumbled on this little park, which is just down the street from Gonella’s. 12/29/23

Home of the Famous 18 & 3 Italian Subs, I get my on Soft roll. Just right for 2 hungry folks. Still the Famous Oakwood Bakery Buns, they stayed open just for a few wholesale customers. Alcamos Dearborn owners retired, they really should buy the place. They sold over double the subs each day of the 2 combined Gonellas locations for 65 year's. Lunchtime at Gonella's Italian Market on Oakwood near Fort Street is an inexpensive fill that has joyed Southwest Detroiters for decades.  The surrounding neighborhood has been rapidly disappearing over the past 2 years as Marathon Oil has purchased and demolished hundreds of properties as part of their communicated plans to create a buffer zone between their operation and local neighborhoods.  This has created some insecurity and complications for several local businesses.  The bridge over the Rouge River on Fort Street connecting the neighborhood to the larger Southwest Detroit community was also removed in 2013 to make way for a new bridge. In operation for the past 75+ years many loyal residents, expatriates, and workplaces faithfully take the detour around the downed bascule bridge weekly for lunch.  Stop by and say hello sometime.  Business has been down since the removal of the bridge but plans to reopen it in January 2015 should be good for business.
